DSL - Modem - Router

My DSL provider is Alltel. I've had it for about 3 years. They provided a SpeedStream 5660. I think it is in the process of slowly dying. I am a networking dummy - Just exactly what is the Speedstream 5660? is it a router, a modem or both in one box? The cost of a speedstream is multi-hundreds of dollars. I find it difficult to believe that hardware like the linksys router (and many others) , which is a fraction of the cost, do the same job.

The question ----- what equipment do I need to replace the Speedstream 5660 ? A DSL modem, a router, or both??? ( I am using a 5-port workgroup hub)

Did you buy it or did yor ISP provide/rent it to you? If they rent it or provide it as a part of your service, inform them and request a replacement, otherwise it's up to you to replace it.

 

Call alltel and inform them you wish to sign a one year contract again as your out of contract by now and the modem isn't covered. Then request a 5200 router/dsl modem to hook directly to your hub. The modem won't cost anything if you sign a one year contract.

 

yea that looks old..just call alltel and tell them it's broke. what state r u from? i gots alltell too. i'v had a friends modem up and die so just say that and they should send u a new one

Oh and by the way then 5660 is an older modem but still a very excellent one.

 

i'v got a 5200. JUST modem. My contract is almost up so we will see what happens

 

if its just the older modem we do offer an upgrade to turn it into a router.
