DSL modem

I currently have a qwest DSL modem (actiontec) and I am thinking about getting something better. Is there any benefit in getting something like a linksys router?

 

Yes there is a benift of getting a router if your current modem is just a bridged modem, because then you get a feature called nat (network address translation) which makes it so your computers ip address isn't a publci addres but causes your router to be given the public ip instead of your pc.

 

So if I don't go the router path and I just get a better DSL modem then the one provided by Qwest, are there benefits to getting a better DSL modem?

 

Generally no unless your current modem is dropping connections or having issues, or your upgrading to something like a router/modem.

 

My current modem does drop wireless signals a lot. Even if I have a high signal strength. One really strange issue is when I watch Lost online it tells me I have lower then 800 mpbs (once it said 500) but when I do a bandwidth test I have getting 1300 mbps. Could this be an issue with the modem?

 

are you using an actiontec gateway? i believe that one is a combination of modem and router. if not, you could try using linksys 4 port router. it can easily be configured and adjust the settings for your modem.

 

The actiontec gateway is a combination...I have it & it works great.
