Hi, everyone. For the past week, I've been having trouble connecting to the internet with DSL (been using dial-up in the meantime), and I was hoping some one here may be able to shed some light on my problem.

My computer's operating system is Windows ME. My DSL service is Embarq and my modem is a Sprint 660 Series. My computer's network card is an Accton EN1207D Series PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (a TCP/IP protocol).

I had called my ISP for tech support, only to be told that it was a hardware problem on my side with which they would be unable to assist me. When told to ping my ISP (192.168.2.1), I received the message "Destination host unreachable." Since then, I have reinstalled my network card's drivers, and I now receive "Request timed out" when pinging.

When I try to do a release/renew, the release goes fine, but the attempted renew results in the following message:

    IP ConfigurationError

DHCP Server Unavailable: Renewing adapter ""

    Windows IP Configuration

    0 Ethernet adapter:

Since I can't seem to find an Edit button, I'll post in a new reply. Under 1 Ethernet Adapter, in my ipconfig /all results, that was the result of my forgetting to switch from dial-up to DSL. With my modem properly connected, I receive:

    IP Address. . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . :
    DHCP Server . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
    Primary WINS Server . . . . :
    Secondary WINS Server . . . :
    Lease Obtained. . . . . . . :
    Lease Expires . . . . . . . :

I hope that didn't cause any confusion, as that's merely my dial-up modem, but I just thought I should point that out.

That is just screwy .....right click your local connection ...properties and set your ip address to 192.168.2.101 ...your gateway to 192.168.2.1 ...and your dhcp address the same (192.168.2.1) ....and your subnet to 255.255.255.0 ...then try to ping 192.168.2.1
ping 192.168.2.1 (note the space between ping and the address)
or open internet explorer and type in the router address ...see if you get a login screen.

Could you please tell me how to edit my DHCP address? I'm familiar with the IP, Gateway, and Subnet, but I'm unsure as to where the option to change the DHCP address is located. Thanks for your reply!

highlight or click on tcp/ip ...properties (are they set to auto - ip and dns?) then advanced and you will find dhcp ...is it set to dhcp enabled?

This on the ethernet connection ...not the dial up. (which you should disbale)

Okay, what should I put in the various fields? Can the "host name" be anything? Thanks for the assistance!

Not sure where you are at ....if you have opened the properties for tcp/ip ..two tabs ...first set ip to auto detect as well as DNS ...then click advanced and four tabs ..ip address should have dhcp enables (and suto metric checked) / dns tab should have check in the bullet: append primary ..... and a check in the box below it : append parent suffixes ....
then at the bottom under dns suffix check in box: register this connection ...
Under WINS tab ..check in box Enable lmhost lookup
and in radio button ...default: netbios over ....

But if you have done the ip and dns to auto ....try closing out ...shutting down ...unplug modem (dsl) and router) ...then plug in modem ...wait ...plug in router ..wait ..then reboot.

"first set ip to auto detect"

By this, do you mean check the radio button that says, "Obtain an IP address automatically"? If so, I've done that.

"then click advanced and four tabs"

The only "Advanced" option I have is to "Allow Binding To ATM", as seen in the above screen capture. I'm thinking this is a difference between Windows ME and other operating systems.

"ip address should have dhcp enables"

The only option in my TCP/IP properties that says anything about DHCP is a radio button under the "WINS Configuration" tab that says "Use DHCP for WINS Resolution". The other two radio buttons in this tab say "Disable WINS Resolution" and "Enable WINS Resolution". Clicking enable prompts you to enter a "WINS Server Search Order."

"dns tab should have check in the bullet: append primary"

I have no check boxes. I only have the Host, Domain, DNS Server Search Order, and Domain Suffix Search Order fields under my DNS Configuration tab. Again, I believe this may be a Windows ME thing.

I'm not sure if Windows ME just has a confusing interface, or if I'm in the wrong place entirely. To get to the box shown in the above screen capture, I went to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network then clicked properties while highlighting "TCP/IP -> Accton EN1207D Series PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter".

If any additional screen captures would be helpful, I'd gladly take more.

I hope my lack of understanding isn't causing me to miss something obvious you're trying to tell me. This DSL connection is the first form of networking I've ever done, so I'm entirely new at this. TimW, I greatly appreciate the help you've given me, and if you or anyone else can clarify where these DHCP-enabling options are, I'd be truly greatful!

Perhaps I'm looking at the wrong page, but I'm getting a tutorial for networking two computers together. What I'm trying to do is get my DSL modem working with my one computer. I appologize if I'm misunderstanding something. Thank you for the link, nonetheless.

Sorry to bump an old topic, I just wanted to say thanks, TimW. Changing the subnet mask from 255.255.255.0 to 225.225.225.0 allowed me to finally access my modem's web configurator, then change more settings from there to allow me web access.

I'm truly appreciative of all your help!
