Dtkli.exe???

My pc was infected with several pieces of spyware and trojans. After running Spbot, Ad-Adware and MicroTrend's free House Call and cleaning things up, I figgured that I was all set. But when I rebooted, I discovered that I cannot run any programs with the exception of Internet Explorer.

Windows is giving me a small pop-up message box that says, "Windows cannot find DTKLI.EXE. Application needed to openfiles of type 'Application'. This box flashes up on the screen 9 times after my desktop comes up and periodically while the computer is on. Anytime I try to run any programs from the icons this stupid message pops up. Something appears to be blocking windows from completely loading.

I am running Windows 98 SE. Any suggestions?

If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better.

 

I had followed all the steps that I can in the post, such as booting into safe mode, etc. I am limited in what I can do at this point because while I can download the programs and have, my system will not allow me to run them without the message box popping up.

I have scanned my system using Symantec Security Check and Trend Micro's Free Online Virus scan in both normal and safe boot modes. Everytime nothing is found. I cannot get my pc to run any other .exe files so running any other tools is not possible at this point.

When I type, regedit, in the Start/Run box, I still get that pop-up box. So it seems that I cannot get it to run.

FYI, prior to posting here, I did a search on DTKLI.EXE in Google, Yahoo and at Microsoft's support web site and didn't get any hits. I'm wondering if something didn't get completely cleaned out. I'm sorry that I didn't write down what I was infected with, but of the 8 or so items that were found I remember that one was "Web Search Tools" and the other was "SUA A".
