    I'm trying to dual boot Windows 98 and Windows XP (don't ask) and I'm having trouble. I finally got into Windows XP, and got a boot menu up using boot.ini, but the problem is I can't get into Windows 98 anymore.

    Whenever I select Windows 98 on the menu I get an error. I can't read the error, because it's kind of off screen.

    Here's my boot.ini
    Code:
    [Boot Loader]
    timeout=30
    Default=D:\

    [Operating Systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
    C:\="Microsoft Windows 98"

    I have a 20GB hard drive that I've partitioned into 2 drives. The first being C: which is where Windows 98 is installed, the second is D: and holds Windows XP.

    What am I doing wrong in my boot.ini?

    Save a copy of your current boot.ini. When you open it in Notepad>File>Save As>choose a location that you can find later if necessary and a newfilename. Then go ahead and edit the original. I think the example below should work for you. I left XP as the default since you know it is working.

    *So basically, Boot.ini doesn't use drive letters but partition locations. Where you have C: and D: you have to replace with the multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(#) stuff.

    Thanks, that did the trick. The weird thing is I'm almost positive I'd done that before, but maybe the "default" section was the problem.

    So, it works now, but it seems I'm missing a ton of files from Windows/System32 on my 98... I dunno what happened, but now I've gotta somehow fix that.

    Anyways, thanks again for helping me get the dual boot menu running.

    You have my sympathy on 98. I always had problems with missing files. I know some people love it but when I switched to XP and first realized I had run it for 6 mos. without a problem, I retired my 98 disk and never looked back. :)

    You seem to have your partitions set right so I guess you installed in the correct order--98 then XP. When I dual booted 98 and XP I loaded both OS's fresh. 98 on a small 3-4 gb partition then let XP take over the rest of the disk. Maybe you could make a new thread and a 98 user could give you some help fixing the missing files. Good Luck.
