    How do you change it so my computer boots up without having to select the operating system? or change the selecting time at the very least. I only have one OS installed (XP) and for some reason i have 2 selections to choose from, both XP although one of them doesn't work. And i think that's b/c when i first installed XP i had a hangup then afterwards I only did a quick format next time i installed it... thx for the help

    If you wanna edit your boot.ini with a nice GUI interface, try going Run -> msconfig. presuming this is XP youre editing on. Just make sure you remove the RIGHT ONE!! or you'll leave yourself unbootable!

    this is what i have

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

    I'm guessing the one i want to delete is the 2nd one... ideas?
    and i see where to lower the time now too... thanks!

    Now that you've got it, it's a good idea to make a back up of your boot.ini file just in case.

    okay the easy way to fix this is to go run > msconfig click on the boot.ini tab and you will have somthing tht should look like this

    boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect <--1
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect <-- 2

    okay i have marked 1 and 2... start with 1 click on it and the entire line shouls appear selected (turns blue) then click check all boot paths... it well give you a popup telling you 1 of 2 things... either there are no boot paths/ boot paths are corupted or it will say all boot paths check out ok... now... when you find the one that doesnt work DELETE click the button to remove and you dual boot problame will go away!
