    hi,

finally managed to get my system dual booting how i want it (without a third party manager), just 2 slight problems remain

    1) can't power off my linux normaly, i click on the 'log out' button and up pops a window and i choose 'end session' and my monitor goes to sleep, i have to either press ctrl, alt + delete to reboot, press the button on my tower to power down or type 'poweroff' as root,

    2) linux is not 'seeing' my internal sata drive, it 'sees' my external sata drive but only when i switch it on when linux is running, if the external drive is already running when i boot into linux its not shown,

    any ideas

    ta

    mandriva linux - master
    w2k pro - slave
using grub to point to windows (grub not installed on the w2k drive)
external sata drive connected by usb

So am I correct in two assumptions here? 1) You're starting in runlevel 3 and then entering startx to get into KDE/GNOME? 2) Both hard disks work?

If so, then to power off the pc, you'd need to type poweroff, shutdown -h now, halt -p, or init 0. You'd most likely need to add your normal user account as a sudoer so that you don't need to elevate to root to shutdown. If you just want to logout all the way without shutting down, type exit once you "End Session" from the Window manager.

To make your hard disks accessible, you'll want to modify your fstab file so that it will mount the disks at boot time and make them accessible to you. Here and here are two pages to help you edit it. You may need to add a driver so that you can mount NTFS partitions, if that's what your win2k installation uses as the file system.

    hi,

    lost me on this bit

when i boot my pc i get the grub option screen, i can choose linux, failsafe or w2k,
both hdd's are ok and work how they should,

i can poweroff normaly with w2k but in linux (kde) when i click the 'log off' button then 'end session' in the window i can do nothing else at all, apart from ctrl, alt + delete (to reboot), i cannot use my keyboard or mouse, even though my pc is still on
at the moment i am using poweroff from a console,

thanks for the rest though, i'll have a good nosy through

What commands are you sending to the kernel during boot?

For example, you can turn acpi off via lilo or grub, which would do what you describe.
