Dual Channel 4x512?

I have heard rumors that it is impossible to run 4x512MB modules of RAM in Dual Channel on an Nforce4 Motherboard. Is this true? If so, why?

Is this true for all boards, or is it just the Nforce series that do not accept this type of configuration?

Oh, and please excuse my ignorance on this subject.

 

As long as the motherboard supports dual channel, and it has 4 RAM slots, then yes. AFAIK, all motherboards with Intel chipsets have 4 slots and can run them all in dual channel. Also, most (if not all) the newer Athlon 64 motherboards have 4 slots for running them in dual channel. It is definitely not a rumor...

AMD's rules (remember the MCH is on the CPU die, so it's AMD's rules not nVidia's or Via's) are somewhat less strict. I think it cares only about having equal quantities on each channel.

Correct me if I'm wrong, AMD 754 pin motherboards do not support dual channel.

AMD 939 does support dual channel. Venice core (revision E) supports dual channel on all 4 slots, whlie revision D and below supports dual channel in all 4 slots at a max of DDR 333. (bug in the chip )

Socet A Does support dual channel.

 

correct, i believe the bug is also on winchesters too.

 

AMD Winchesters is revision D, which has the "bug".

Also, I'd like to make a slight correction to my above post, revision E AMD cpus does support DDR 400 on all 4 memory slots. I didn't post it, just want to make sure others understand this....
