Dual Core over Standard Processors

Can somebody tell me how a 2.00 Ghz Dual Core Processor is faster than a 3.00 Ghz standard Processor. I know Dual Cores can run two processes at once. But, wouldn't the 2.0 ghz Dual core be running each process at 1.00 Ghz, whereas the 3.00 ghz processor would be running one process three times as fast, which effectively would be faster than the dual core system, no?

Unless, The Dual Core processor runs EACH process at 2.00 Ghz which runs at 4.00 Ghz effective. If somebody could clear this up for me so that I can compare the two.

    Thank you.

    It's neither, actually.

A dual core processor is two processors running at the clock speed that they are rated for. (2GHz in this case) Their speeds don't add up, they're independent - a logical equivalent to two separate physical CPUs.

This is supposed to add performance while multitasking. If one gets bogged down, you can still process with the other...

So it isn't 4 ghz effective, but is IS 2 processors running at 2Ghz. Thank you, that's all I wanted to know.

Its 2 processor CORES running at 2ghz each. Additionally, the cores are not comparable to the older 3ghz cores, and are in fact much more efficient, so even one of those 2ghz cores (in an Intel Core2 Duo for example) are superior to an older intel 3.0ghz CPU

Okay, maybe this is boggling my mind for no reason, and maybe not

When you say 'superior', do you mean in architecture, or performance?

I know intel has began producing CPUs using a new shorter transistor, but I just can't see that overcoming the difference in clock speeds. Especially in the Pentium D 800 series which still use the old architecture.

Check out http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=105149 for my opinion on my 7 month old Tecra A7 duo-core laptop.

Never again, until the software utilisation of duo CPU's improves.
AUD$2500 that I could have spent better on a single faster CPU, probably. Bazza
