    Hello!

I upgraded from Vista to Windows 10 and would like for my laptop and my external monitor to both be on and stay on MIRRORED
If I unplug my external monitor from the laptop and boot up then the Laptop screen works
If i plug in my external monitor in the serial VGA port where it goes then when I boot up the external monitor works BUT my laptop is BLACK?

I have done many Google searches but in my Windows 10 where you go to SETTINGS and DISPLAY there is no 1&2 screens or anything really for multiple monitors...just at the very bottom it says DETECT other monitors BUT it does nothing if clicked....

It may sound Odd but when the laptop still was VISTA driven they both worked mirrored when the external was connected....Never had to set anything, it just worked

I can't find ANY multiple monitor settings anyplace and it is frustrating because all the Google searches I have done said look here or there for where the settings are to enable or disable multiple monitors, as I say I have none of the setting areas mentioned? Hope that isn't confusing to understand what i mean...

Can anybody tell me how to fix this?

    THANKS!
    Ron

Never ran Vista but in my Win 7 laptops if I want both the laptop screen and the monitor/tv to display, I have to tap the Fn + F5 key. One tap, laptop screen, next tap external only and last tap BOTH.
Since you didn't mention the brand and model of the laptop, I have no idea what function key allows the feature you want.

Just fried up my very old 7" linux netbook and Fn + F5 works the same way on it. netbook screen only, monitor screen only, both.

Yikes, I was doing something on my notebook as I typed this on my desktop and posted.
It should not say fried up, it should be fired up.

SO I tried this AND no go..it is F5 key to toggle monitors but I get an ERROR message saying my PC can't project... AND of course as i wrote there is no "multiple monitor" settings anyplace...

The laptop has an old Radeon 31000 vid card and I did try to update it several times BUT it always said the monitor has the correct driver already and it didn't install....what if you unistall and reinstall...when I uninstall it win't my screen go blank then? I don't know but need to be sure about this LOL..... I even got the radeon EXE program that checks for your software and updates it if needed..it cycled and said no everything was good....So I still am one monitor...It is funny simetimes if I plug the external monitor in the serial where it goes..and then reboot SOMETIMES then the external will work but NOT the laptop...and THEN sometimes even with the ext mon connected sometimes it just boots up with the laptop screen only...no matter what though I have only been able to get one or the other to start at any given time...never both...

try to connect manually through ( Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>Windows Mobility Center )
it has a manual set-up for an external display.

What is the exact model of the Toshiba?
I'd like to see if Toshiba has ANY Windows 10 drivers on site for your model.

I suspect there is no proper Windows 10 driver. Why? Because the dual display worked in Vista but in Windows 10 you get the error " PC can't project".
The proper place to get drivers is from Toshiba, unless you have a desktop computer and install a video card.

you will find this in the control panel on Win'10 (Mobility Center), you'll click on the "external display" setting (connect display) Untitled.png 1Untitled.png

then you will see four options to the right plane of the screen, the one you are looking for is duplicate.
i have this connected to my LED TV, then i kick back and watch the Smithsonian Channel...usually on second screen only .

When I did this and clicked on connect it said "my computer cannot project" and it was no go so I didn't get the "duplicate" screen to pick

The exact model is Satellite L550D-ooj
    Serial # PLSPO-00J005 64 bit

i went to Toshiba site..put my model in and there were a few entries there...One for Toshiba Service Station which is supposed to update everything for you when installed NOT AVAIL it said
Some other BIOS ones were there too

Never mind Displaylink don't think that is it...well it still must be a driver issue some how... I have a Radeon 31000 graphics card and I updated it from the company's website, win 10 said my driver was already up to date

Sorry, I suspect it is a discontinued model as I'm unable to find specs or a manual, let alone drivers from Toshiba.
All my searching leads to 3rd party sites. I don't point anyone to 3rd party sites to get drivers.
The only decent site is crucial and they'd point you to RAM and ssd upgrades.

I downloaded a manual from a Canadian site
    https://snlookup.com/toshiba-satellite-l550d-00j-pslp0c-00j005-laptop-notebook-p90231

    Windows 10 is not supported.

is this the driver that is currently installed on your machine?
if not, this release is the most recent version available.

I will check that out although it is a cab file....can I double click it to see the name etc of the driver...never used a cab file before...
And then where is it at?
Also say if I UNINSTALL a Graphics or Display driver to update...will my laptop go black once I uninstall a graphics driver?
Hope that isn't a dumb question..I have updated drivers before just no Un installed graphics ones and don't want to be toast if you know what I mean :)

it should be able to install over the top without uninstalling current drivers.

Another way to install a cab file (Realtek Audio driver as example)

    • Extract the cab file to a directory using winrar or other extraction tool (create a new directory)
    • Open the Device Manager in admin mode (Win+R devmgmt.msc)
    • Select the device and Click "Update Driver Software..."

    • Browse and select the folder where you have extracted the cab

    • And install the driver !

This is the easiest way i found

once you extract the contents of the CAB with a zip extractor to say a familiar easy to find location like a "new folder" on your desktop,
then you'll use the device manager updater to "browse my computer" & search your computer for the folder on the desktop.
it will install over the current older file and save it as a rollback or previous driver that you can revert back to in case you are having issues with the freshly installed newer updated version...no need to uninstall anything...
then screen may flicker a bit or flash as its installing itself, just be patient an let it complete the install, you will then be prompted by the GUI if it has completed or installed successfully or not, in that situation it may ask if you would like to reinstall the previous driver again
very similar to doing the update on line except that you have the file stored locally on your machine desktop already. then after the update, migrate the folder on another location in your machine or copy it to a USB flash drive to keep on hand if you ever need to reinstall it again.
