I want to create a dual operating system start up. I need a os that doesn't bog down like XP when running heavy duty programs, i was thinking 2K. i know that i need to create a seperate volume... I just don't know how. I need a step by step guide, like a dual start up for dummies kind of thing. I already have it set up so it waits for you to select another Os but i don't have a volume for a different 0s. i have two hdd one is full so i cant use it, it is the XP master hdd, the other has about 15 gig left. any one that can help me, i don't know a thing about software so i need a very easy guide of some kind. (Help and Support center is worthless) btw my system is a FAT32. neither hdd has a jumper.

First of all you need to resize your hdd. You may do it using any partition resizing utility like Acronis Disk Director or PM or Partition Resizer. I use Disk Director and will give you step by step recommendation for this software:

    First of all run it.

You will see all your partitions
    1) RT click to your second hdd partition
    2) Choose resize partition then choose the size you need (make it 15 GB smaller in order to leave this space for new partition)
    3) You will see unallocated space that will appear at the croped space
    4) Rt click to unallocated space and choose Create partition
    5) Select file system (NTFS for W2000 or FAT for Win98) and size of partition you need (15 GB)

Feel free to perform all this operations. They won't come into effect until you select 'Commit'.

But generally ADDS interface is very clear and I think you’ll be able to do it by yourself even if you are not an computer expert.

When you have one more partition, you may boot from your new Windows installation CD and begin the installation. One of its steps it to choose where you want to install the system - so you will be able to choose your new partition.

However, after new Win2k installation you may have a problem.
The thing is that earlier versions of Windows have less smart installers and they can set default its own loader that can ignore other, newer OS. WinXP will allow recognizing the whole Windows family.

This way you will need to edit boot.ini file or install any multiboot loader like Grub or lilo or use OSselector (that is included in Disk Director). By the way, Disk Director can also help you to set a multiboot environment.

Don't forget to commit all operations.

Ive never used this one but it's Free & Avaible here at MG

I'd suggest using NTFS file system it's Safer, more Secure & More Efficient

    Fat vs NTFS

I dont see how W2k would be any better than XP, if your PC is as you say bogging down with XP it will do the same with W2K and worse!
Maybe this is more of Hardware problem or build up of spyware/neglect & garbage??

    Windows XP Outperforms Earlier Version's

There is only one thing that may allow W2k to run better than XP,
    Drum roll ######################
Your System Specs, if you have an older system p3 or hope not, previous technology.
If thats the case cough cough 98

i'd like to add to the cr.Gena opinion, Disk Director have additional utility os selector, which can help to manage dual boot. It's a boot manager and it allow to install as many oses as you want, also you can install several oses on the same partition.

    It's strange to hear.
It's strongly NOT recommended to install different systems on the same partition.
It may cause a lot of problems: system files of 2 OSes may be messed up. Even Windows itself notices this fact during its installation.

yes i agree with you, but i only say the feature of the os selector.:

    * New! Boot from an additional hard disk drive. Acronis OS Selector enables you to set the disk order so you can boot from any hard drive you select
    * New! Insert a bootable CD/DVD and it will automatically be detected and displayed as a boot option by Acronis OS Selector
    * New! Detect operating systems that became unbootable due to some accidental reasons with the
    * Support up to 100 of any known operating systems including Windows XP and Linux on a single PC.
    * Install several versions of Windows on a single partition. Operating systems with same folder names (e.g. C:\Program Files) on one partition are supported.
    * Acronis' exclusive! — Windows Installation Wizard to guide you through the entire Windows installation procedure.
    * Acronis' exclusive! — Install and boot operating system from any partition of any hard disk.
    * Protect OS booting and setup with a password.
    * Hide operating systems and partitions.
    * Clone an OS installation as a back-up.
    * Repartition your system for a new OS installation.
    * Boot viruses protection included.

As Asus say's, its all about hardware and running a nice clean (garbage free system)

Hell! I run XP Pro SP2 on one of my old system P3(933mHz) with 256mb SD ram, and i kid you not, it runs faster than 2K
I am super strict on what runs in conjunction(slim antivirus & FW programs).
I have a seperate drive for all my important data only, another is partitioned to dual boot XP and 2k.....if anything occurs that i dont like, its simply a case of a clean install with my data well protected on the other drive .......I love the smell of fried HD in the mornin..lol
then all runs super fast again.
I think good system management will always keep a smile on your dial!!

    Regards....

I system manage without stop. I'll most likely wear out my drives by defging to much lol. no. 2k runs faster on this com because it is a hp pavilion 6830 wit a 700 mhz processor and 192 mb of ram. Please say i will not need to do much hardware work because this com is a b!tch to get into (minitowers... blech). I might need to say that i got my other 20 gig working so i now have two 20 gigs. 2k seems to run faster on this com regaurdless of the system managment i perform. http://www.mangaforums.org/showthread.php?t=3125 is an artical on a different thing i have done. my XP system is FAT32 because it is more compatable. now i need a NTFS system so i can get more stabability. nether drives are over 30% used so i got the room i think. like i said i have no clue how to do this so i need a step by step guide. Also if you could give me a suggestion of a particion manager that doesn't run in a comand prompt like Dos that is free, im open.

BTW this com is not on the internet so XP sluggishness is not becuse of spyware or other internet crap.
