Its been a couple years so agian I'm getting that itch to build something new. Right now I'm looking into building a dual processor system but I can't decide to go with Intel or AMD. The P4 D processors I see can top over 3 ghz while AMD lags in the 2 range with their dual cores. Which would be better to go with? I know the AMD offers lower power usage, but would it have any other benifits over the faster P4?

I also heard from a coworker that the P4 D is not a "true" dual core processor while the AMD is....how much truth is there to that?

The AMD cpus get more done per clock cycle than the P4's. So even though they are running slower they are the faster cpu's. The dual core cpu's do run slower than single core ones. Also, AMD will be putting out a new socket soon. It will allow you to use DDR2 memory. If you go the AMD route you may want to wait for that. I also read that Intel is getting ready to release a cpu that they say will stomp AMD's best. It will be interesting to see if it's true.

AMD already released AM2, the new socket for AMD procs. If you are planning on getting a dual core proc, id wait for Intel's Conroe to come out, its suppoesd to smoke anything AMD has but we'll have to wait and see if it holds true.

Thanks for the correction Viper. I hadn't realized it was out already.

Thanks everyone.....I had no idea Intel was holding onto a monster like that....I can't even imagine running 2 of those in my system  It fits my timeline too since I still have to save up some scratch to build this thing. And with the next series of graphics cards looming, the current ones (which I feel are extremely powerful already) will be dropping. The article mentioned a possible street date of September. Has there been any firm confirmation of that time frame?

PS. Sorry about the delay in reply....I have been away for the weekend.
