My MSI mobo supports dual RAM with 4 slots. ;)

I have heard that if I wish to use the dual RAM feature I need to use two (or four) identical memory simms, else the system may become unstable.

Question: How identical must the simms be?

Obviously they must be the same size and speed. Can they be the same make and model?

they are supposed to be matching, or identical sticks (same size, speed, etc.). however, someone around here...i think it was dperino...successfully installed 2 different model sticks and it worked. not sure though.

Well, it first depends on what type of RAM your motherboard takes. If it takes Rambus, then yes, you need two identical sticks.

If you are talking about Dual Channel DDR RAM, then I'll say it's a good idea to have identical sticks. It is possible to pair two seperate types, (I believe they at least have to be the same size) but the only way to be sure is to try them out. It just depends on how picky the motherboard is and how different the memory modules are.
