Hi sorry, to ask a dumb question but I have tried to find the answer online and cannot as well as changing task bar settings.

My friend was trying to set up my old wifi, it does not work now, but that's another story. While setting it up he brought the Icon that is two little computer monitors that show what the network is doing and put it on the task bar before the time.

He left it there, when I called him to ask him how to get rid of it, I only want it to show when there is a network problem, he said he forgot how to do it, he is a MAC man now. OK, then why did you put it there!
I would like to get rid of it, any suggestions?

Also, I am using FF 3.6.22, it works better for my programs. I want to make my computer default mail my yahoo mail, not Outlook.. I found a way to make it windows live in IE, but I want it to go to Yahoo.
I found articles that said how to do it using FireFox, but they do not work I do not have in my menu what they are asking for.

When I click on a link I do not want it to go to OutLook.
I had changed it before my HD died, now with the new HD I cannot seem to change it.
    Thanks in advance.

Right click an empty space in the task bar and choose properties. Under notification area, unless it is XP, but similar, you can hide inactive tasks or choose to not show them under customize.

Tim, I have XP Home, and I have tried this. I change it, to hide always, and it goes away and then when I restart the computer it's back. I never had this problem until he put it on my Taskbar. Any other ways?

Then it must be in your start up items. Are you sure you want to disable it?

Not sure Tim, there is nothing that looks like it, but I am not sure what it would be called or the abbreviation they might be using in start up. Sigh,

Well, in the past it only showed up when there was a problem with my internet connection. Now it is sitting there flashing all the time. I sometimes get migraines so I would like to reset it back to the way it was. Do you think if I do a system restore to the day before he did it, that would help?
I want it to show up when there is a problem but not just sit there flashing away.
    Thanks

Yes, you can try a restore. Not sure if it will help.

One the properties, customize tab, you should have the option to "always hide".

    Hi Raven,
Try this..... start> connect to> rightclick Local area connection> properties> on the general tab at the bottom of box you have an option of wether or not you want the icon to show in notification area when connected, if this is ticked, untick it to stop it showing in the notification area> click OK.

The icons should be gone for good now, unless there is a problem with your connection.

Thanks iain.t but I do not have those options. However, I did a system restore and it is back the way it was before he changed it. Bad news it knocked out my antivirus center. I will have to download that again.
Thanks for all of your help!
If anyone knows how to change windows default mail from Outlook to Yahoo in FireFox 3.6.26 let me know. Thanks to all!!

Thanks, I have tried that I do not have this in my Fire Fox browser...
    # Select Options | Set Y! Mail as default webmail from the navigation bar.
    # Now select Options | Preferences… or Firefox | Preferences… from the Mozilla Firefox menu.
That is why I cannot figure out how to do it. I will keep looking thank you!

Yahoo mail is a web service accessed through a browser such as Firefox, not a program on your computer like Outlook (or Outlook Express?), so I doubt it's possible for it to be made your computer's default mail program. The only time I can think of when the default mail program would start is when you click on a mailto link on a website, and in that situation you would have to copy the mailto address, open Yahoo Mail and paste it into the address line of a new message. For the few occasions this situation would arise it's probably easier just to let it use Outlook (Express?)

I'm not the world's greatest expert on email so if that isn't correct hopefully someone can put us straight.

    Let's try this,

In FF 3.6, press the [Alt]+[O] keys for the options window.

At the top of the options window select the "Applications" tab, two columns will appear. Look for "mailto" in the left column, scroll down if necessary.

When found, left click on "mailto". In the right column it will show the currenty selected option with a drop down arrow to the right. Click the arrow for the selection list. You should see "Use Yahoo! Mail" in the list. Click it and then click the "OK" button at the bottom of the options window.

In the link that usafveteran gave you, there is another link explaining how to make Yahoo! Mail the default mail option for Windows. It does however require the downloading and installation of the third party application of Yahoo! Messenger. You do not need to do this to make Yahoo! Mail the default in Firefox.

Thanks Plastidust - what is it you do for a living btw? ;) - that also works in the current version of FF, 7.0.1, and not only allows you to select Yahoo Mail but also Gmail. Good stuff! Let's hope the OP can use it too.

I am doing something wrong it is not opening, yet it worked for Earthling
I tried using ALT O ALT O ( number) ALT + O and no window opened.
I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
I pressed them seperately and then together.
I am clearly not understanding something. Sorry....
Is there another way to explain it.. does it not work in 3.6? Or am I doing something wrong.
    Thanks

Yes, it does work in FF 3.6.

It's the Alt key + the O key. That's the letter oh, not a zero. Press and hold the Alt key. While holding the Alt key down, press the O key, then release both. The Options window should pop-up.

Another method would be to click on the "Tools" menu at the top of the browser window. The bar just below the title of window. Then select "Options" from that drop down menu.

At that point the Options window should pop-up.

Which ever method you choose, once you're in the options window, click(select) the "Applications" tab at the top of the options window. Then look in the left column for "mailto". Click(select) it, the right column will show the currently selected mailto default. To the right of that will be a drop down arrow. Click on the arrow for a list of available selections. "Use Yahoo! Mail" should be in that list. Just select it and then click the "OK" button at the bottom of the options window.

    Edit:
If you still have a problem, there is one more thing we can try.

Perhaps a pic re Firefox Options>Applications would help?

Also have a look at: Set Program Access and Defaults, check what you have listed under Custom and see what you have as the default email program? I have mine set/ticked as current but also have enable access to Outlook Express box ticked. But then I have my ISP webmail who uses Yahoo email so that makes it easier for me anyways. Don't know what else to suggest.

I think(not sure) :confused where she is having trouble is pulling up the options window. Maybe the above and below thumbnails will help. Although, the "Alt O" key combination should have worked.:(

Yes, I was having trouble pulling up the options menu using ALT + O even with the step by step instructions. I still cannot do it!

I had been in tools - options- but did not know there was a "mail to" in the left column that I needed to click on to make the change. When I changed it a few months ago, it was in the drop down menu in IE.

So, Success. I used the tools- options- content, then pulled down menu and picked Yahoo mail.
Question, in IE, the only choices I had were Outlook or MSN. I chose MSN.
When I click on a link in website will it now take me to MSN or Yahoo?
Thanks for both for your patience and help. I still do not understand why ALT + O did not work.

You aren't alone - it didn't work for me either, so I just used the options menu.

:celebrate Good job, glad you got Yahoo! Mail to be the default in FF. Much thanks oma.
If you're using FF and you click on a "mailto" link, then you should be taken to Yahoo! Mail, which is what you want. But then, "Alt+O" should have worked to pull up the options widow too :confused

If you're using IE and click on a "mailto" link, you will probably be presented with MSN.

This kind of got lost in the shuffle, but have you remedied this situation yet? It's really more important than making Yahoo! Mail the default for FF.

Yes, I did that immediately before I did anything else. At this point if it uses my Hotmail account I am happy. I do not have Outlook set up so I needed these links to go somewhere else.

May I ask another question, please.
When I use CC cleaner, at times it says, empty, delete registry value.
I do not know how to do that and have been told to not mess with the registry.

I have been using ASC5 for the last week if I run it, it says, 1 problem with Dis Ck and it will ck after reboot. After reboot it checks... then I have to restart again and then it adds a bunch of numbers to SII - I will have to copy this again when it happens.
I am just wondering if ASC5 was having a problem because this exact problem has come up twice now.
I have never done anything with the registry because I do not know how to do it.

If it happens again I will write down exactly what the Dis Ck is doing. It was late and I did not write it down.
    Thanks for all your assistance.

if you are trying to remove the two computers in the right side taskbar right click on the two computers, choose status, click on the button that says properties, another window will open at the bottom there will be a box with a check mark it says show icon in task bar. uncheck and it will be gone. leave the bottom box checked so it will inform you when there is a problem with the network.

Someone gave you some good advice.

With CCleaner, if you don't know what a given registry entry represents, it's best left alone(don't delete/remove/empty). I've never had CCleaner mess up though. It's better to have a harmless/useless entry than to risk deleting a required one. If you decide to delete a registry entry that CCleaner has found, you will be given the option to make a back up of the registry. It's a good idea to make the back up.

Another useful item to have is Erunt. Run it before making any changes to the system. Then, if necessary, you can perform a complete and exact restore of the registry, back to just prior of the change.

If you mean Advanced SystemCare 5 Beta, someone else will have to help you there, as I've never used any version of Avanced SystemCare. I'm not a big fan of such "All In One" utilities, although they do have their uses. When it comes to the maintenance of a computer, I'd rather use a scalpel than a lawn mower.
If it's the beta version, that's certainly a consideration.

Thank you! Great advice and help!
It is Advanced System Care 5 Beta and I think I should go back to 4 or find something else.
I have run it 3 times, once a week and it keeps telling me,
Correcting Error in Index $Sll File 9
I am not sure if it said File 9 all three times.
It says it will start at reboot. I restart, it does a ck dsk and then it starts running a bunch of number. Then I restart. And the computer is fine, the next week I run it, it says the same thing.
    1. Should I go to malware and run the the entire procedure
    2. delete ASC5 and go back to 4 or anything else you can suggest.
Thanks......I am not sure what to do, but this time I ignored the correcting error, something is not right.

Personally, I would "uninstall" ASC5, via Add/Remove Programs or Revo Uninstaller. Re-boot, then, from the Command Console(CMD/DOS), run chkdsk with the "/r" parameter. Think you will find that chkdsk will fix that "Index $Sll File 9" error.

Running chkdsk: Click "Start" > "Run", in the "Run" box type CMD and tap Enter or click the "OK" button. A Command Console(DOS) Window will open. At the prompt you would type CHKDSK /R and tap the Enter key. Once in the Command Console, the procedure should look like the following. You type or enter what is in bold.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>CHKDSK /R
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)Y

You want to enter a Y and press the Enter key in response to the restart question, then close the Command Console(DOS) window. Now you can reboot. Chkdsk will run. Be patient, it takes quite a while for chkdsk with the "/r" parameter to run. It can take over an hour depending on the size of the drive. At times it will seem like it has stopped working(especially in phase5/stage5), this is where the patience comes in to play the most.

As far as the Read and Run Me first. If you believe the computer is infected, then yes you should.

Thank you, I used Revo. I was not sure about the left over registry components there were 15 so, I deleted what seemed to make sense.
I do not think I have a virus, however, when ASC5 kept making me do the ck dsk I was not sure if the problem was from a virus or a problem with ASC5. Making me do the same thing 4 times.
I will run ck dsk and get back to you. Thank you

Thanks, again, I did the read and run, posted and I will let you know what happened. Thanks for your advice. I really don't understand what the $Sll file 9 is. Is there a place I could go to and read about it, any suggestions. I am pretty much teaching myself the computer. Thanks, Raven

Although this article is for Windows 2000, it explains what the "Cleaning up xxx unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9" is. There are a number of other articles about the message at Microsoft but this one seemed to be the clearest.

Note that in general it is a minor error and can be ignored, but it could also be an indication of more serious problems. Since your drive is relatively new and you're not experiencing any problems to speak of, think thisisu is right, don't worry about it. The article does say that these minor errors are many times caused as a result of doing a restore or a lot of copying, deleting and moving of files or folders.
