Duplicate device on network (very noob question)

I'm VERY non-technical so please bear with me.

I switched my broadband provider a couple of days ago.
    They provided a new modem (Thomson 585V7 ... I have been using a V6)
The broadband provider supplied a CD make it easy to get everything going, and everything went fine on the desktop.

I then tried it on my laptop, but the process failed when it tried to connect.
Started the CD again, failed again.

Googled, and saw a suggestion to uninstall my PCMCIA software and reload it, which I did.
I then used the PCMCIA software to scan for my network, found it, put in the WEP key, and got going.

However, windows is now reporting a duplicate device name on the network ... it's the 585V7 modem.
It's also taking 10 mins or more for Windows to load my settings on boot up.

I though I might just be able to delete it, but I couldn't see an option to do it (like I say, I'm very non-technical).

I'd be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.

    Thanks

    PS.
It's a Compaq 620C laptop, running XP Pro.

Go into Add/Remove Programs and remove the software associated with the Thomson modem/router on the laptop.
Generally, you only need to run the software once on the main connecting comp to set up the modem/router. Then use the Windows wireless application to control your wireless connection.
