    Hi,
are there any good free program for finding duplicate images,as sometimes my images have different files names or the same.
I have loads of odd copies or extra photos lying around and I tried to do it manually but they finally got the better of me:cry
Yesterday I tried a free program(clone remover),but after downloading it and running it,it finally said its only free to do 20 files???????:banghead

I've used Dup Detector for years - free, unlimited, and very reliable.
Works perfectly with XP, but I haven't tried it with Vista or 7.

    Primary datafile

    Caliban,
I have read the help, but having a little problem here,it says,No data file loaded, what do I have to put in here?

"Here you will either open an already built datafile or build one. All methods use a Primary datafile so the Open and Build buttons will always be enabled for the Primary datafile. The Secondary datafile and the Single image Open and Build buttons will be greyed and disabled if the comparison method does not use them. You must open or build a Primary datafile before proceeding to Find dups. If the comparison method requires a Secondary datafile or Single image, these will also have to to opened or built before proceeding to Find dups.
If you have previously built and saved a datafile you can use the Open push button to open it. Otherwise press the Build button to bring up the Build images data file screen and build the images datafile.

After you have datafile(s) ready press the Find dups tab."
Could you help me with this first step?please?:confused

I won't have access to an XP machine 'til tomorrow - if you're still having problems, I'll write a little tutorial then.

The free program that I've used for years, "Easy Cleaner 2" has a duplicate file finder in it.
But it does not limit itself to just pictures, for instance, but every file in the PC. Some files have to be in more than one place or some program will stop working, so deleting all duplicates can be disastrous if you don't really know what you're doing.

    Good Luck,
    :)

hi grey buffalo, would it not be easier and quicker just to do a search for the images and view them as thumnails you would then see ALL the pics stored on there, maybe laborious if you have thousands but if you have hundreds it shouldnt take too long to delete them manually rather than keep trying to find the software to do it!

I have been at that for the last two days and apart from absolutely doing my head in,I have landed up with more images than I began with.
    Thanks for you suggestion though.:)

Ok - here you go (the program loads on a Vista 32-bit machine, but will not work with 64-bit):

    Open Dup Detector
    Click the 'Get data' tab
    Click the 'Build...' tab
Click 'Browse', and point to the folder containing your images
    Click 'OK'
Click the 'Find dups' tab, leave the percentages at default, and click the 'Find dups' button
    Click the 'View dups' tab
The duplicates (with dimensions and file sizes) will then be presented side-by-side, so you can compare them - you may delete the duplicates at will.

    Oh thanks bigbazza ,
the problem with these other programs like Dup detector is that they only appear to do one folder at a time, which defeats the point as one lands up with all these folders with no duplicates in each folder...except all the different folders have all the duplicates-makes things really complicated so hopefully I will get luckyrolleyes

I personally use Easy Duplicate Finder, freeware and I thought was hosted on MG but the download page doesn't load for me... it's also available from http://www.easyduplicatefinder.com/

It's VERY easy to use, and can scan entire drives. Just remember that the results include the original files AND the duplicates, and not always in that order. Be sure the window is big enough so you can see which files have matching file sizes, etc.

    Coo,
thanks Sgt I will try that one,
bigbazza are you familiar with VSD,as when I wish to add a folder,I am not able to click O.K?,any reason you can think of for that being?

Unfortunately Easy Duplicate Finder scans with file names and not pixels,so if one had changed file names,it will not detect duplicates.:(

@greybuffalo: I also use Dup Detector. You can compare two folders, just click "Compare images between two datafiles (no comparison within the datafile)" under 'Method' Then you would build two datafiles (folders). When done building and finding dups I find it easiest to sort from high% to low% match when viewing them, it just makes the more probable matches appear first. I was also confused a little when I started using Dup Detector but after you get the hang of it, it works pretty good. Also when doing the "Find Dups" click 'setup' and there are 4 match settings you can choose from. Play with them until you find the one that gives you the results your looking for. They do give different results in my experience.

First of all, it seems to be shareware now... that's BS! It's too bad they took a good thing and ruined it. It was freeware when I got it. Secondly, it scans based upon several factors, NOT necessarily file names though! Be sure to explore the settings of the program for scanning types, etc.

Anyway, here's the last freeware version (I've uploaded the install file from my computer):

plodr, my mistake. :-o I've been a paid member for so long, I forgot to mention it. :-o

You can become a paid subscriber by making any contribution.

USD$5, $10, or whatever you can spare, annually.

    Well worth it, IMO.

I still stand by the last freeware version of Easy Duplicate Finder. I've used/tried many programs, and it works better than all of the ones I've tried.

The version my download link points to in the post above is freeware, and still works great.
