Durn I forgot to copy before deleting the program. I downloaded Adaware personal from two different sites and still got illegal operation when trying to use it. Also, just afterwards I would get and error message about a missing file. Windows 98 Explorer 6

Try this (found it on Lavasoft's website) but I modified it slightly to make it easier to follow and to get the download from MG's:

While there have been a few users that have had some difficulty installing Ad-aware SE, those problems have been solved. It is essential that all upgrades or reinstalls of Ad-aware SE be done cleanly. Would you please try this?

Use either the Ad-aware SE uninstaller, or Windows ADD/REMOVE. Uninstall all versions of Ad-aware SE that you have. Go to Windows Search, type in Lavasoft, and remove all the leftover files. Download again from here: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=506

Save the download to a temporary location such as My Documents. Disconnect from the internet. Disable any AV programs you may have running, close all open windows and programs. Run the installer again. After installing, reboot your computer and then reenable your AV. Run your first Ad-aware SE scan. If this does not help, please see the below link the first post by jschein:

Sorry but I guess I will need more explicit instructions.

Use either the Ad-aware SE uninstaller, or Windows ADD/REMOVE. Uninstall all versions of Ad-aware SE that you have.

from rick I used SE uninstaller and checked add/remove in case. I used custom to insure I had all all the files and also used automatic.

Go to Windows Search, type in Lavasoft, and remove all the leftover files.

from rick Here I am not sure what you meant by going to Windows Search, type in lavasoft and remove all leftover files. I did to go file search and look for anything from lavasoft to adware in case this was it but not sure if read your message correctly.

    Download again from here: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=506
Save the download to a temporary location such as My Documents. Disconnect from the internet.

from rick I got this part.

Disable any AV programs you may have running,

from rick - Here not sure what AV programs means unless you were referring to all programs other than explorer and systray. I cleaned all others out.

close all open windows and programs. Run the installer again. After installing, reboot your computer and then reenable your AV.

from rick - Here still not sure what AV means.

Run your first Ad-aware SE scan. If this does not help, please see the below link the first post by jschein:

There was a file mentioned here but everytime I downloaded it, it said "not a windows file or corrupt".

All that was meant by Windows Seach is the file search capability that is built into Windows. So yes, that is file search. You could do the same thing just using Windows Explorer to navigate to the c:\Program Files\Lavasoft directory and deleting the folder.

AV stands for AntiVirus. It is typcially used in forums like this to refer to what ever antivirus program you may be using. Like McAfee, Norton, Avast....etc. The reason for doing this is just to be certain that your antivirus program (which is normally running in the background) is not causing any problems with the Ad-aware SE installation.

There is nothing wrong with the file at the link I gave you. It downloads just fine. It is ZIP file (a compressed file). Was you problem really with the download or was that you don't have the ability to handle zip files in your system. If it is the later, download and install WinZip: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download525.html. You need to extract the rich32.dll file out of the ZIP file and put it in your c:\windows\system directory.
