Hey all. I am trying to save as much space as possible while burning a back-up copy of my DVDs. I am using DVDSHRINK to burn them.

I am finding that most of my DVDs have seemingly excessive audio files that take up tons of space and ultimately lower the quality of my back-up disc once I shrink it to fit a 4.7g dvd+r.

I know there are seperate audio files for the different surround options, but there seems to be many duplicates...

On one movie, for example DVDSHRINK shows:

    AC3 2-ch English 199mb
    AC3 5.1ch English 464mb
    AC3 2-ch English 99mb
    AC3 2-ch English 99mb
    AC3 2-ch English 100mb
    AC3 2-ch English 99mb

If I keep only the 5.1ch, will I not be able to get the sound on a TV (no reciever)??

    Do I need all 5 2ch??

Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

Re: dvd audio files (caption files)

I was also wondering if the caption files have any use after I remove the DVD menu. Can I activate the captions using the remote for the DVD player or do I need the menu on the DVD to use them?

Also, if DVDFAB is not supported at MG forums, let me know. I wasn't sure if y'all offer support on progs that can be used to break copyright programming.

    thanks

Save only the main movie and you will need only the 5.1 channel audio. The other audio channels are for optional commentary or special features. All DVD players will convert it to analog audio for TVs and other equipment that have no digital input.

Thats what I needed to know. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I left all that audio on the DVD's I have already copied to my HDDs. Any way to figure out which ones are which once saved as VOB files on my HDD??

Not a big deal I guess. Just taking up some extra space. I can get them out when I burn the dvds anyway.

When looking at your vob files, the 4 - 1gig+ ones and one less than a gig that follows them, is your main movie and will have the 5.1 surround sound (or 2 channel if no surround was available). The other smaller vobs will be the extras and commentary but unfortunately you can't just delete them and then expect the dvd file set to be recognized since the main ifo files have references to them and if their gone any encoder or player will choke on the inconsistancy. Thats what shrink does, it allows you to remove things and then it rewrites the main files to be consistant with whats actually there and whats been removed.
