I can play music CDs and DVDs on MS MediaPlayer and CinePlayer; the sound is fine on CDs for MS MP and CinePlayer--however, I get no sound if I play a DVD on either one.
Yes, I have adjusted my sound settings and even played the DVD that would not give audio on a relative's DVD player, and it played fine (audio and video).
What component am I missing to get audio to work for DVDs on my XP?:confused

Well, I tried Sonic's solution, but to no use. I think there's a glitch in my soundcard or my XP isn't equipped to handle DVD audio; I have to get in touch with my computer guru so he can troubleshoot it for me.

Maybe try another media player... try one of these (they're all free) :
    VLC http://www.majorgeeks.com/VLC_media_player_d4674.html
    Zoom Player http://www.majorgeeks.com/Zoom_Player_Standard_d413.html
Media Player Classic (my personal favorite media player) http://www.majorgeeks.com/Media_Player_Classic_for_Windows_2000XP_d5782.html
    MPlayer http://www.majorgeeks.com/MPlayer_d5663.html
    and finally, GOM Player http://www.majorgeeks.com/Gom_Player_d5595.html

EDIT- I was just thinking... no, I didn't hurt myself ;) But- is this a new problem? If this problem has always been with DVD's, maybe you need an audio cable from the DVD drive to the sound card. Most newer DVD drives don't need this cable, but many older ones do (and some of the newer ones). It's a thin gray cable with black headers on each end; 3 conductor on a 4 pin header (red, white, and black wires in a gray sleeve). They're only a buck or so at any PC shop. It hook into a socket on the far left side of the DVD drive, and plug into a socket labled CD_IN or maybe AUX_IN on your sound card.

I am impressed with VLC and Zoom; I'll try one tomorrow when I have more time and see if that works. Will let you know.

I installed ZoomPlayer awhile ago tonight and tested my DVD; ZoomPlayer would not work. However, I tried CinePlayer with files/components I got from ZoomPlayer, and now video and audio both work. Thanks dlb.
