DVD burner doing weird things

Am running XP Home, SP3
Have CD burner, Lite-on LTR 522465, DVD Sony DVR-DW-G120A
Both previously functioned at same time with no issues with both being identified as separate drives under the 'send to' commands from 'File'
Now-system recognizes both under device mgr as installed, no !/? and properly under 'My computer' (a separate cd & dvd ram drive)
Both will burn run, burn cds.
Sony dvd will not play video dvd, will not burn dvd's with the 'send to' from the 'File' menu. Received 'Windows encountered a problem' message
Cannot enable 'record' under 'properties' for both at same time, so appeared that both were being treated as cd players for some reason
But, Sony dvd will burn dvd's using CDBurner XP program.

Note: Don't know it has any bearing but, Roxio easy creator no longer functions also for some reason & cannot uninstall as it no longer appears in the installed program lists in control panel, going thru Revo uninstaller or thru RegEdit/Windows/Uninstall routes. Cannot attempt to reinstall as disk has apparently gone to the 'retention file in the sky'
