I bought a DVD burner a couple years to replace my dvd rom (since then i've been searching off and on for a fix without success, and often use my cd rom for games and such instead now). The burner is a Sony DRU-800A with the latest updates and yet, right from day one, if I put any disc in, 9 times out of 10 it freezes the computer up totally so all i can do is a manual reboot. Though IF i leave the dvd in the drive while doing this, upon entering windows, i can then play the dvd with no ill effects. My only dvd playing software is Cyberlink PowerDVD.

Last year I got a new motherboard and a few weeks ago I got a new power supply so I know it is not either of those that is the culprit.

I have tried switching the dvd burner and my cd burner master and slave status, both being on the same IDE channel, with no luck

ive disabled the IMAPI cd burning service, ive tried uninstalling PowerDVD, making sure there are no other dvd programs installed..

The only thing i can think of that may or may not be helpful is, with my old dvd-rom drive that was in the same position the burner now is now in, the dvd drive would often slip into PIO mode.. all the time.., im not sure if this could be something...

i havent gone out and bought a new burner on the chance that its not the actual drive that is the problem and wasting money

just a few basic specs on my computer are

    P4 1.7 GHz
    1.5gb DDR ram
Asus P4S800 motherboard with the SiS 648Fx chipset
    400W power supply
    running Windows XP with SP2

if there is any information im forgetting just ask..
i would appreciate any help on this, as i have been unable to find any by searching the web
    Thank you in advance

so i put my dvd burner into my father's computer, and took his old dvd rom and put that in mine, so far the burner in his computer is working well, and the dvd rom in mine is not having problems

any ideas what could cause the burner in mine to freeze it?

a little update, with this other dvd-rom in, apparently my computer is still freezing when i insert a DVD, so I figure its either software or maybe a damaged registry or something, any thoughts on this? Anything I can do short of a full reformat?
