I have two identical HP Model P7-1202 PCs that I bought at the same time. They have identical DVD+RW burners installed. One will write to brand new Memorex DVD-R DVDs, but the other one won't. I get error messages like "Install blank DVD, Cannot write..., etc" I was trying to make recovery disks and a diagnostic disk at the time I was having problems. I was successful on the other computer. Any suggestions? The hardware particulars are (for both systems) as listed from a Belarc Advisor analysis:
    Windows 7 Home Premium
hp DVD RW AD-7250HS SATA CDROM Device (Optical Drive)
    AMD SATAQ controller
CyberLink - CD Creator Version 5.5.4423
    CyberLink - DZM Version 2.05.3517
CyberLink - Recovery Manager Version 5.5.4423
CyberLink Corp. - LabelPrint Version 2.5.0.4507
    CyberLink Corp. - Power2Go Version 6.1.0.5705

I have not run any type of diagnostic or anything at this point. Not sure what approach to take.

Check the drive's firmware and see if there is an update.

    How old are these computers?
DVD burners have been known to fail.

If you're mechanically inclined then you might want to take the known good drive out of that computer and place it in the other computer to rule out a hardware problem.

These systems are fairly new, less than two years old, I think. I'm not sure about the firmware. I'll have to check, but why does one unit work and the other doesn't - same hardware, same software?

As I stated before, DVD drives can fail for no apparent reason.

Have you tried exchanging drives yet?

No, I haven't. The drives get used only rarely and their troubleshooting/repair have a fairly low priority right now. These systems are in our small home-based business and other business issues have us pretty busy right now. I'll try to find some time and try your suggestion, however. Thank you.

Same hardware, same software, but same firmware? The firmware has everything to do with how the drive functions and what media it will accept.
or it could just be a bum drive.
