Dvd burner kaput???

Hi,

I am getting an error message when trying to burn a DVD with Nero 10. The message says to insert a blank DVD but the DVDs I am inserting are blank! I have tried every type of blank DVD that I have, R, +R and DL. It was working fine this morning. It is also happening with CDs.

What operating system and service pack # are you using? Reason I ask: there are some Microsoft fixes available, but I think they are OS-specific.

However, if nothing else has changed with Windows and Nero since your last good burning session, I'd have to suspect your media. You might consider grabbing a different brand of disks, see if your symptoms change.

That is, unless your burner has decided to die. What's the make and model # of your device?

 

XP SP3. The system is an HP Pavillion and the burner is an HP 640b. As I said previously, this morning it was working just fine. Nothing has been changed between then and now. It spits every disc out that I put in. I am thinking maybe I should uninstall Nero and reinstall. As an experiment though, I put in a prerecorded DVD and attempted to open it with DVD Shrink. DVD Shrink says there is no disc in the drive.

Another thing to try is to clean the drive using a cleaning disk. I know I've had issues with optical drives before, and a simple cleaning helped.
