I have a Dell with XP Pro, SP2. I currently have a single drive 16x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability. I would now like to add another drive for burning CD/DVD's from another CD or DVD. I have no idea what to look for other than an internal unit that does the job quickly. Also, will I need additional software to run this unit?

I use an NEC/OptiArc 18x DVDRW. I've had it for about 18 months and never had problem with it, ever. It shipped with an OEM copy of Nero 6.6; I think the newer DVDRW drives come with version 7 or 8. And no, you won't need any additional software. If you currently have burning software installed that you're happy with, there's no need for another. Personally, I have a couple of different burning apps that I use for different things, and Nero is one of them. OEM Nero doesn't include the BurningROM program; to activate it you need a licensed serial number. I got by without BurningROM for about a year before I determined that I really needed it.

A lot of it is down to personal preference, or brands that you know and trust. I went for NEC in the end, just because of the price at OcUK online!
As dlb said, Nero is a good one that a lot of people use. Roxio is used by a lot of people but again it's down to personal preference.

I didn't have a DVD burner on any computer so I bought a NEC from newegg.
The price was rock bottom because it came with no software (I already had a burner that came with software in the computer) and no manual. Before I bought it, I found and downloaded the manual (4 pages) and located the newest driver and had it ready in case I needed it. It was no problem to put in and I did need the newer driver.
You may want to check out newegg's burners.
