Hard ware is simple enough ....just like the cd drive ...open a bay on the case and connect the second ide connection to the drive *set that drive to slave - assuming cd is set to master ...attach a power plug and pull the sound plug off cd and attach to dvd ...should be good to go (ALL THIS AFTER TURNING OFF POWER/UNPLUGGING CORD!!)

Download the pdf file by right click / save as. Have a look at chapter 5. Pretty basic but it will give you the idea of what is what.

Thanks everyone. Actually I found something about this on another thread:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=92682&highlight=dvd+burner+installation

and I managed to install my new cd/dvd burner in place of my old cd burner by following cepy123's instructions. However I can't get my computer to acknowledge that it's there. The old cd burner is still showing up in my hardware, not the new one. I reinstalled the old one and it still is working OK, so how do I get the new one to work?

Go into Device Manager and uninstall the drive, then reboot and let Windows do the rest. (for XP, go to start, run and type in devmgmt.msc then OK)

And make sure you have the correct Master/Slave heirachy, as explained in the links I posted.

OK. I thought XP would automatically recognize the new hardware. I'll try what you suggest with running "devmgmt.msc" and see what happens. Thanks!:)

I tried running devmgmt.msc and all that happens is the Device Manager screen comes up. Any suggestions?

That's what is supposed to happen.

    Read my suggestion again.

Go into Device Manager, and uninstall the incorrect drive, reboot and let Windows do the rest.

You can do this by right-clicking the item in Device Manager, then uninstall, then reboot.

The incorrect drive is not there, but the new one is not there either.

Are there any burners listed, or are there any errors? There should be no ? or !.

I suggest you check your wiring and Master/Slave jumpers are set correctly.

There's only my DVDRom listed, which is fine it's supposed to be there because it still is there and I want it there, and there are no errors. The old cd burner's jumper was in the middle under the S, and so is the jumper on the new one, which is I think how it should be, right? --the new one should be just the same position as the old one? The only error I can see is in my taskbar (on the bottom) there's a ! over the InCD icon. Also, I tried to run the windows hardware wizard thing, to add new hardware, and it couldn't detect anything (from Control Panel>Add hardware). It's a BenQ DW 1655 that I'm trying to get working, so if anyone knows anything about this I'd appreciate the help. Thanks.

First thing to do is uninstall InCD as that can cause problems.

With the physical installation, if the drive shares a cable and controller with another drive, then they must be set up with the correct Master/Slave setting.

The new dvd burner has the jumper in the same position as the old cd burner that it's replacing. Isn't that the way it's supposed to be?

I wasn't there when you installed it.

If you installed it in the exact place of the old one, then yes.

However, as you're having problems, I suggest you take some time and read the links and suggestions I posted, then check the cabling and jumpers.

Insomniac, I reinstalled my old cd burner to the way everything was set up originally, and I went into the bios and the secondary master & slave are both set as the cd rom--does that make sense if I also have a dvd rom installed + the cd rom? I don't know what to do.

I forgot to mention that this is the original configuration (with the secondary master&slave both being the cdrom) and it WORKS. HELP!

Lot's of people having problems because of INcd ....(might want to uninstall until problems are fixed).
Cd-rom should be set to Master ....on the end IDE connector ...DVD should be set to Slave and on the middle connector of the IDE ....boot up and should be working.

There is a Registry edit you can try, but it's last resort only.

First, you need to uninstall InCD as I suggested earlier, then make sure that the drive is physically installed correctly.

If all that fails, then try THIS.

*Take the necessary precautions before working in the Registry, like backing up and creating a Restore Point.

If you aren't comfortable working in the Registry, then don't.

I was wondering if you could tell me if my drives are physically installed correctly if I describe the connections to you? The flat grey ribbon that starts at the motherboard first connects to the cdburner (whose jumper is set to slave) and then the grey ribbon goes to the dvdplayer (jumper set to master). There's one power plug that goes into each of them, and then there's a small 3-wire plug that goes from the dvdplayer directly into the motherboard. That's the original wiring, which works properly.

    That sounds OK.

Uninstall InCD, then check Device Manager, and if all else fails, try the Registry edit.

    Insomniac,
I just wanted to let you know I got the thing working, finally:) . The new dvdburner is the Master and windows is recognizing everything now. Dont understand why it wouldn't work the other way around, though. Maybe it has to do with that 3-wire plug that goes from the motherboard into the dvdburner? What is that plug anyway, do you know? And just out of curiosity what's up with InCD? I had an old version of it and it worked OK, so what's happening with it now?

InCD is packetwriting software, and can cause all sorts of problems.

It was useful in it's day, but is of limited use now.

That 3 wire plug is the audio wire.

You don't necessarily need it hooked up, but on some systems the headphone plug on the drive requires it.

This new dvd burner came with software that includes nero6 and InCD. When I installed the nero6 & InCD part of the software it disabled my antivirus, but I don't know which one is responsible for doing that. Can you suggest any better software to use with this thing? My dvd burner is BenQ 1655 with lightscribe--I don't know much about this but it seemed like a good deal for the money.

Nero is fine, just uninstall InCD. You should be able to select components in Add/Remove to uninstall.

OK but don't I need something similar to InCD to do stuff like "format a disc to use as a big floppy"?

Also, I have a CD-RW that i've been using to backup some files and now when I right click on a file to send to the cd (which is in the new dvd burner), there is no "send to" the dvd burner. When I tried to just drag and drop the file to the cd-rw it says that it's read only, whereas before when I used it with the cd burner it would write to it no problem. How do I do this now?
