What format do most home dvd players use. I copied some of my dvd to the mpeg2 format, but my dvd payer will not play them. Am I way off base here??? Is there any usefull websites out there? I have spent the last hour searching google.

    Thanks,
    Cob

Star let's have patience with this obviously frustrated newbie. Maybe a more direct better answer would help.

To back up you DVD movies stop using the method you are using. You do not want MPEG.
    Use DVD Shrink at http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4020.html

    or DVD Decrypter at http://www.dvddecrypter.com/

For general help in these areas goto http://www.dvdrhelp.com/ and refer to the wealth of online guides and topics.

By the way some very cheap standalone players like the Norcent DP300 can play MPEG files and you don't need DVD format. They will play them right off of a CD-R/RW too. Can even play VCD's and SVCD's.

I am a little--- no strike that-- alot confused right now! You said to stop using the coversion of mpeg2 right? Everything on other sites say to convert your store bought dvd's to mpeg2. The other question that I have is what format does dvd shrink use??? I'm sorry if this seems repetitve but I don't get it.

There are many methods. Some more complex than others. Sometimes different methods are needed for very specific reasons. But if all you want to do is backup the a DVD movie, all you need is DVDshrink (if it needs compressing. i.e., will not fit on a standard 4.7Gb disk). If the movie does not require compressing to fit, the easiest method is DVD Decrypter.

Both DVDshrink and DVD Decrypter keep the files in the proper format for burning directly to a DVD with your burner in DVD Video format. They do not require the all the conversion steps to make an MPEG, split it into separate audio and video files, and the using a re-authoring tool only to merge them back together again, and then to burn your DVD. As I said above, sometimes there are needs to do this more complex task but not if you just want to do simple tasks.

I don't think this is the forum for discussing DVD video backups. Look at some of the guides here: http://www.dvdshrink.info/guides.php and http://www.dvddecrypter.com/guide.asp

There are many more guides available out there in various forums like on: http://www.doom9.org/
