DVD/CD drive volume PROBLEMS!!

First off id like to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone and everything that has to do with this site. i just discovered MajorGeeks a few days ago. I had a lot of software problems, but they are all solved! thanks to all the forum threads and free wear hosted by MajorGeeks.com.


THE PROBLEM: :cry

Whenever i play a DVD or CD on my laptop drive im getting a skippy sound, as if my comp was lagging over the volume. the graphics on dvd are fine, but the sound is distorted and unusable. This only happens when i play a disc (audio cd or dvd) otherwise my sound is absolutely fine, games and all. Ive tried playing cds with itunes and ive played DVD with power dvd, media center, and dells media direct, all give the same result of a skippy audio. Funny thing is that i can download audio from a cd that contains no skipping, while playing audio at the same time, from this same cd, only with the dreaded skipping. this sound distortion only comes when my cd drive is spinning a disc, while playing audio from that disc. im on a Dell inspiron e1505 with windows xp media center edition.

p.s: i do not posses geek power even close to anyone else's on these forums. lets just say im a wannabe, so if you could please make the answers simple enough for a wannabe that would be great.

help, anyone?

 

quite a few people have looked at this thread...is this one a mystery? do i need a new drive?

cause my warranty just expired... >.<

 

A mystery? You just need to supply more information.

Model number of Laptop and screen size.

How much RAM memory? How much of that is video memory?

How big is the harddrive and how much is free.

How old is the Laptop.

Try downloading WinAmp to play the audio CDs.

If the audio CD is played often, consider compressing it to an MP3 and save/run from harddrive.

Did you run Disk Defragmenter lately? You should run it at least once per month or weekly if heavy usage.

im not sure what you meant by a model number. i said in the post that it was a dell inspiron e1505, as to screen size, im pretty sure its a 15.4 in screen.

im on one 1 gb of ram and a 256 nvidia 7300 (i think its a 7300) video card.
im not sure what you meant by video memory.

i have a 120 gb hard drive with 60 gb free in c and my whole d drive free. (which is about 25gb)

laptop is about a year old and as to downloading winamp, ill hold off for that becauae ive tried enough other programs for playing discs.

i dont play audio cds that often, its more a not being able to play dvds problem with and even sound problem. (which is very annoying)

yes i do keep up to date on my disc defrag. and i use iorbit not the crappy windows option.

 

Do you have the most recent driver for your CD drive? If not, update them, and see if that fixes the problem.

I am on a Compaq computer now, but elsewhere in this forum I am trying to fix an HP, so the computer I am on is not the one I want to fix. Obviously your dell inspiron e1505 works well enough to post from and I even searched the internet for a quick look at that model. Sorry for confusion.

 

mimsy how do i update my driver for my cd/dvd drive? this probably sounds like a dumb question but remember im a wannabe.
