DVD/CD ROM Issue - help appreciated

I'm having a bit of trouble with my current system and would like some advice on where to start troubleshooting.

My computer is having trouble recognizing the DVDRom and CDROM drives that have been in it for the last two years. They are visible in the IDE list during the boot sequence, but once inside Windows they are not present in Windows Explorer or recognized as present by other software like Roxio.

Since the start of this, I have been getting lock up and it will last about 20 to 30 seconds, then release. It acts like the computer is trying to access the HDD, I can even hear the write noise during lock up.

Any advice on where to start would be appreciated.

I had this problem before when I uninstalled DAEMON tools, my DVD/CD drive dissapeared off My Computer.

I went through this and I got it back on and up and running.
