DVD/CDRW drive disk detect problems

The disk drive I am on is a hitachi HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4241N. For some reason it does not detect all cd types. It detected a movie dvd, a data dvd disk, a linkin park cd, and a ubuntu dvd, but it cannot detect a slipstreamed windows xp cd, a memtest86 cd, nor a burnt audio cd. I have tried uninstalling it in device manager and restarting the computer to allow it to detect the drive. I also tried installing firmware from support.dell.com for it. It's driver version in device manager is 6.1.2535.0 and it's driver date is 7/1/2001. Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem will be greatly appreciated.
