Am trying to find out which is the best software for backing up dvd movies / ps2 games on to dvd's as it seems a bit of a minefield.

I find dvd fab is very good.

But as with everything like this there are lots of programs that are good at doing the same thing the trick is finding the one you feel comfortable with.

give dvd decrypter a try (rips the DVD)
then use dvd shrink to compress it to fit on a single-layer dvd
then use you favorite burning software (ie nero) to burn it.

    good luck.

    I use DVD Shrink.

It copies the menus and everything, but you need to get some burning software so i use Nero.

The only problem with dvd shrink (it is a great program) is that it wont dycrypt some newer movies although it will do 95% of them

The only free dvd Decrypter that is continually being updated is dvdfab decrypter, dvd Decypter and DVD shrink stopped getting updated a while ago and so wont work on the newest DVD's.

No DVD Shrink still updates, they just arnt allowed to link or have the file on there website. So they give it to another site.

    Check it out: http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html

I'm pretty sure that DVD Shrink is not being updated. I've just reviewed the revision history, and Version 3.2.0.14 - 25 July 2004. This is the version previous to the most current. Quite some time ago in terms of the "piracy/anti-piracy" race. (not to say that the intentions are illegitimate, just that DVD manufacturers are continually trying to defeat the rippers) I've had the latest version of DVD shrink for awhile IIRC, and I agree that it doesn't do a great job of ripping anymore. Almost every movie I try messes up.

DVD decrypter, on the other hand, has done an excellent job for me right up to present. It worked for my copies of Sin City and Batman begins, which were both released somewhat recently this year. To compensate for DVDShrink's failings, I had been using this to extract an image, and DVDShrink to compress the image (ie not directly from disc). I could then use DVDDecrypter again to burn the image to disc (I've found it more reliable than most apps). This worked flawlessly for me until I got a dual layer burner, and lost any need for compressing with DVDShrink.

Therefore, I recommend the latest versions of both these lightweight, free apps. If you use them in the method I described above, I almost guarantee they will work for you.

DVD shrink isnt being updated, the author now works for Nero on Recode2 or Nero bought the code off the author (which is what looks like has happened as most changes are purely cosmetic)

DVD shrink hasn't been updated for a long time, look here.

Best thing to do IMHO is donwnolad dvdfab Decrypter and then Shrink if neccessary with DVD shrink.

On 24th of November, 2005, Macrovision Europe contacted AfterDawn.com, notifying us that they have acquired full rights to the DVD Decrypter software and have changed its licensing terms. Effective immediately, they have decided to withdraw all distribution rights from all third party companies, including AfterDawn.com. Thus, distributing DVD Decrypter is now as illegal as it would be to distribute cracked copies of Windows operating system or pirated copies of games.

OH LAME. I just found this out. Perhaps it IS better to go with DVDFab Decrypter, despite how packed full of rainbows and lispy accents it is. ;)
