    Hi Guys

My E Drive (DVD/CD) has disappeared. Everything else is working fine, all other drives.

I have searched on here for solutions and have seen to check the Device Manager. On checking there is this error message with a yellow exclamation mark.

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

I saw a post already on here re error code 19 but didnt understand it.

The DVD/CD drive was working the other day, but I have recently swopped laptops with my husband and saving my files from my old laptop to both the Boot C Drive and recover D drive. Mainly to the Boot C Drive as it had more space.

    I have a medion Akoya E7220, 4GB, 64 bit
    Windows 7 Home Premium.

It doesnt sound damaged as I can hear the DVDs in it whirring and reading it.

I really hope I can sort this out as I have spent at least a day swopping the darn things over.

    Laywoman's terms appreciated!

    Thanks in advance.

Go to the Control Panel, Device Manager, CD/DVD and click to open the Driver's Tab and uninstall the driver. Reboot the computer to reset it and see if it mounts at this point.

    If not:
Many times deleting the Upper and Lower filters entry in the registry will fix this. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461 Resolution subsection. Written for Vista, but works in Win 7 as well...

Be sure to get the right key, there are several there that are very close in name to the one you want.

    Hi there

    Thankyou for the information cipher.

The first option was not successful.

I followed the instructions to 'delete the Upper and Lower filters entry in the registry' as per the link.

Once I located the correct file only the Upper Filters were present. There were no Lowerfilters.

I terminated the operation. What should I do next?

    Thanks x

Did you reboot? Did you delete the upper filter, not clear here from what you said...
What is the status now? Still no CD/DVD player?

    Hi cipher

    Sorry I wasnt clear.

I wasnt sure what to do becos only the Upperfilters were there, so I aborted the whole process, so I havnt deleted anything.

I wasnt sure whether there was a problem becos the Lower Filters were not there.

So should I go ahead anyway and delete the Upper filters even thou the lower ones were not there?

Does it matter that the Lower Filters were not there?

    Cheers

    cipher Major Geek Extraordinaire

No it doesn't matter on the lower filters...
Yes, delete the upper filter key, exit regedit, reboot...

    Coolio!

I have read that once you delete the Upper filters etc, it can sometimes affect some of your software. I use DVD Flick and it is now coming up with errors. Could this be why and is there anything I can do about it?

Is it worth uninstalling DVD Flick and re-installing? Or will that make no difference.

    Thanks

    J x:)

What are the errors, can you post them?

An uninstall, with revo, is not going to hurt and may help. You will lose your settings, so be sure to make note of them first if there are any. But first, let's see the errors, OK?

    Hi there again

I have re-installed DVD Flick and it is now working, thanks.

cipher, you are very knowledgable about all these things. I have another problem and am going to post another thread, however I'll ask you first, just in case.

As I mentioned I have swopped over laptops with my husband. The good news is his DVD drive works :), bad news, the internet will not connect wirelessly :(. If I plug the ethernet cable in it works straight away and is fine, as soon as I pull it out the connection is broken.

Hysterically (historically), sometimes when I was using that laptop and there was no connection for whatever reason?? I would right click on the 'internet connection' (2 TVs) icon, bottom right. I would click on 'Diagnose and repair' and it would then say 'Turn on wireless capability', I'd say yes and then it would connect. This option does not appear now.

The laptop can 'see' the usual wireless network working (4 bars etc), option to 'connect', but when you press that it says 'Windows cannot connect to **blah***. Tries to diagnose it and goes round in an unsuccessful loop.

I have searched the help files to find out if there is another way to turn on the wireless capability, with no joy, if that is the problem.

No settings have been actively changed on that laptop, just file transfers to and from an external hardrive and importing the same.

My husband is not a happy bunny rolleyes, So I need some more of my bacon saving b4 my hubby wants his own laptop back :cry

    Here's hoping!!

    Hi cipher

    How ya doin?

Since I have changed my DVD registry I am unable to download itunes. This is a problem for me as my IPOD is attached to me physically and psychologically for my books and music :(

When I try and 'run' the correct version of itunes to install it, the error msg says "The configuration data for this product is corrupt. Contact you support personnel".

Eeeckk sounds pretty serious, any ideas?

I was reading this thread, and saw this in the first post:

"saving my files from my old laptop to both the Boot C Drive and recover D drive. Mainly to the Boot C Drive as it had more space."

    RED FLAG!!

If that D: is a "Recovery Drive" or partition, there is to be NO other data besides the Operating System recovery files on it. Saving other data on it could and most likely will prevent you from using the recovery option if/when it is needed.

    hi Guys

cipher - Re iTunes, I have also been liasing with online apple and the error msg "The configuration data for this product is corrupt. Contact you support personnel" remains the same when I attempt to install (run) itunes.

the mekanic, on my RECOVER - D Drive - there are 3 folders which I think were there from the start

    DRIVER
    RECOVER
    TOOLS

there is also a lone file called 'swconf.data', should I remove that?

There was a DVD FLICK exe file which I have deleted.

OK, the uninstaller does not see the itunes, correct? And a new install of iTunes fails?

Have you been able to install anything else? I want to eliminate problems with the Windows installer. Could you try to install something and see if that goes well?
For example, and this may kill 2 birds with the 1 stone:
    First run CCleaner.
Is QuickTime installed? If so, try to uninstall it and reinstall. Reboot. Then try the iTunes install again...
If QuickTime is not installed, install it. Reboot and try the iTunes install again as well...

DO NOT delete the configuration data file (swconfig).

    Not a good idea...

I mentioned that I have been liasing with apple also, as I need to try and get this sorted before I go on my holidays.

    This is the link,

if you have time to read, it shows me installing other pieces of software. But anyhow I will do what you suggest as well.

    Cheers mate. xx

cipher, yes itunes was uninstalled successfully. Now it downloads, so I get the itunes64 setup.exe file, but will not install / run (as per the error message below).

I hope that makes sense. :wave

I see that more than a few people out there have this problem, and came across this detailed, not for the faint of heart, rather involved attempt at a fix:

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/2395...other-apple-software-from-a-windows-computer/

Note: IF you decide to to do this method, read and follow instructions step by step, paying attention to every detail.

    FWIW: The "Everything" http://majorgeeks.com/Everything_d7787.html
is a great app and a great replacement/addition to the native Windows search software...

    Hi cipher

Here's where I am at. I did as you said.

    1. When I downloaded and tried to run this version of itunes (as per this thread):
    http://www.apple.com/au/itunes/download/
I got the error msg as discussed '"The configuration data for this product is corrupt."

I tried something else, I downloaded and run a version of itunes that was specifically for Windows 7:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1427
This DID install and looked all normal.
However, when I went to open it it said " The file itunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes" and wont open.

I am not sure whether this is something that you can help with as it looks like an itunes issue rather than my computer, do you think?

You have been kind and patient enough and this might not be your field. With this in mind do you think I should start a new thread.

I am consulting online with itunes as well, and I am gona update their thread asap, but historically with every issue I have had with my dear laptop you Geek guys on here are far superior! :)

    So watchcha think? :)

Keep this thread as is, heck its been here for a while, all interested parties know what's going on.

Keep us apprised of what Apple sez...

Ask Apple if you can safely delete "The file itunes library.itl"

Also, for info, I am not interested in retaining any old libraries or playlists or anything from any old version of itunes. Quite happy to start from scatch, I have all the music/books saved in other folders.

    Hey,

    Same problem but windows 8

Microsoft doesn't link their help articles across windows versions and I can't find one for win 8.

    Can you direct me?

already uninstalled driver and restarted to no avail.

    ... erp,

except for the guy below who apparently had no trouble figuring it out on windows 8...

I'll try to follow the windows vista guide then see if it works.
