Can someone help me with a jammed DVD drive? I know about the pinhole trick and it works fine but I don't want to be opening this drive forever with a paperclip. I just stopped opening an hour ago. The drive still works as far as closing and reading the CD in the drive but I have to force it open with the paperclip every time I want to remove or change a CD. Is there a way to fix it (hopefully by me :D ) or is it better to replace the drive? Thanks for your advice...

If the tray drive motor is broken and the only way to eject the CD is to forceably use the pinhole and drage the tray out then as prices of DVD drives are cheap these days ( then that depends on your $$££ situation ) then I would personally plump for a new one.

    Halo,
Thanks for your input. If no one else has repair advice, it looks like yet another trip to my neighborhood computer store. I think I picked the wrong profession. :) Thanks again for your advice...

out of curiosity, go to "my computer" right click on that drive, does "eject" work? if so, then it could just be your button that's wore out (if not, i'd say it's the drive)? anyway, just my .02 worth. ;) - sos

Thank you for the tip - I downloaded the program and it is a nice little one - unfortunately not working on this problem. Thanks for your input!

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice. I'm feeling kind of silly at the moment - have fixed the problem but don't know what actually caused it. I noticed this afternoon that a couple of programs were acting up and/or not opening. It took THREE reboots!! but all problems appear to be solved including that non-opening DVD drive. Have not had this type of problem since going to Win XP and would not have figured it to interfere with the opening of the DVD drive. Live and learn...
