    Hi

Whats a Comcrap laptop, do you have a link to their website?

Whats the Windows version and service packs being used?

But if the upper lower filter fix doesnt work, then I would be tempted to delete the CD?DVD drive from device manager and reboot, Windows should pick up the driver again and install, may fix this.

If you boot into Safe Mode, does the CD drive get recognised?

It was a Compaq c300 and the drive was not in device mgr like I said in the OP.
I figured it out, it kinda hit me - remove the IDE from device mgr and it found it!!!! Every other post on the web only has 1) Remove the drive from Device Mgr
    2) Reg hack the filters & 3) Remove and reinstall the physical device... now you can add remove the IDE!
