Dvd drive not recognized

I just installed multiple windows updates from the windows update website. Before installing updates, my dvd drive was working fine. After installing updates, my dvd drive is not recognized. Also, there seems to be no power to the drive, and the eject button is not working. There is no listing in device manager, and no yellow exclamation marks on any devices.

I have a rented dvd in the drive, and can't retrieve it until I get the drive open.

Please help!

 

You should be able to eject the drive after a reboot before Windows starts.

After you eject the CD let it boot and see if Windows sees the drive.

 

If sach2's suggestion didn't work:

Most drives have a small hole somewhere on the front plate for just this situation. Turn the computer off, and unplug it from the wall socket. Straighten out a paperclip and press it straight into the hole - you will meet some resistance - that's normal. Keep applying increasing pressure. You will feel something beginning to give and finally the tray will slide open as you push.

You say after installing some windows updates your DVD stopped appearing in Device Manager? If you have it system restore turned on, have you tried restoring the PC to an earlier date? If that doesn't work or you are not using system restore, go to Microsoft and download Service Pack 3 as an .exe file. Reinstall the service pack . . . that may straighten out whatever caused the problem.

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but after posting this I rebooted, and the problem was solved.

Silly effing me!
