I have a HP DVD Writer 740b and the drive shows up under My Computer as a CD drive. It does not recognize both movie DVDs as well as blank DVDs. I am using the correct format of DVD and I have the latest drivers. Any help would be great =D

Has the computer got some DVD burning software installed. Windows can be a bit reluctant to burn DVDs without it. And the non playing of movie DVDs suggests that a required codec is not installed. When I bought a Sony DVD burner it came with Cyberlink Power DVD and Sonic Record Now DX. Power DVD seems to have the codec and it allows Windows Media Player to recognize and play movie DVDs. There are probably loads of free apps that will achieve the same. :)

I have Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 installed. It doesn't seem to just be playing movie DVDs either. The drive itself shows up as a CD drive instead of a DVD drive and any DVD (including blank ones) show up has having 0 bytes of space, so I do not believe it is a codec problem. I actually already have a number of free codecs that I believe should work for movie DVDs. Thanks for the attempt though ;)
