    have actually got 2 problems-

1 my dvd drive won't open. it is recognised and device manager does not show a problem. i tried uninstalling and installing again but no change.

2 my laptop keeps going off and restarting, but with a prompt saying a problem exists with the hard disk and that i need 2 run a hdd self-test in rom set up. sometimes there's a prompt for drivelock password, even though none was made. HHHHEEELLLPPPPP!

    1. If it won't open, it is a hardware problem an you won't fix it using software. Can you open it by using a paperclip in the little slot?
Examine it to see if anything is stuck or gone off the track.

    2. Change the settings so you laptop gives you a BSOD (with an error message and number) instead of simply rebooting when an error is encountered.
Right-click My Computer and select Properties, click on the Advanced tab and into the Startup and Recovery settings. There should be an automatic reboot option there that needs to be disabled.

won't open wit a paperclip. am not too sure if it's stuck/jammed.

don't know how to change the settings to give a BSOD. the last error displayed after going off was- fixed disk parameter table or BIOS error. pls advice!!!!!!

With the laptop turned off, if you stick a straightened out paper clip in to the tiny little hole next to the DVD open button, it doesn't pop the drive open? Sometimes you need to push it in until you feel a bit of resistance, then push a bit more and it should open. If it doesn't then it is physically jammed/broken and will probably require replacement. For the hard drive, visit the hard drive maker's web site (it will be different from the PC maker) and download their diagnostic tool. They are usually run in Windows to create a bootable CD or floppy. When the CD (or floppy) is created, you'd boot to it and run the extended advanced tests to find out if the hard drive is 100% healthy....

Good luck! I hope this helps!

I gave directions at #2 how to disable the reboot option so you get an error message.
Not only should you write down the exact wording of the error and post it, you should also post the first number that appears in the form 0x000000## where ## can be letters or numbers.

Probably, until you get a chance to get a replacement drive..... follow plodr's instrcutions and post an exact error message and we'll go from there.

indicates a prolem with the hard drive as does the second error. Since you have not given the brand and model of computer, we can't search for a proper utility to test your hard drive.
