    Hi MajorGeeks,

My dvd drive has suddenly stopped working, when I try to play a disk I get "the request could not be performed because of an I/O error".

I'm using: Vaio Laptop, vista home premium 32-bit, MATSHITA DVD-RAM.

I have already uninstalled any burning apps, I've tried microsoft FIXIT, deleted upper & lower filters, reinstalling drivers and hardware. The only thing I can think of that I haven't tried is a good old-fashioned wipe of the lens! But I'm saving that as a last resort ;)

Any help would be much appreciated. :major

Have you tried unseating the DVD drive?

Taking the drive out and putting it back in.

Well i had a similar problem, i power downed the computer, took the drive out, started it up again saw what happened, turned it off again put the drive back in and started it up. It worked and i followed the same steps you said you did.
