HELP@! My DVD drive is acting possessed! I swear to GOD it's being weird. I'll be sitting here doing nothing to start it and it will just open up like a ghost pushed the button or something. It's really freaking me out. It does it when I play 3d video games and when I don't play them.

I did intall a different DVD drive than the one that originally came with my computer because the on that came with my computer stopped working with most DVD-RW's. But that shouldn't explain why it keeps opening and closing on it's own should it?

The driver thing says it's all like up to date and there's no problems with it when I go to the system panel.

Under the Device panel it says I have a Sony DVD RW DRU-800A
My computer is a majorly upgraded (as in max ram, nvidia geforce 7800 agp card, 300gb hd attached etc) Sony Vaio PCV-RZ34G
I have all the latest windows updates etc

I just don't know what to do. Please someone help =( I keep thinking Ihave a virus and I've ran every virus checker on my computer and it shows nothing. I'm really at a loss.

You must have a bad contact when your computer is closes click very fast on
your open/close button and there some stuff you could buy for cleaning
    the contact.

You know the button you press to open it, not the one on the case, but on the drive itself. You can get somthing called contact cleaner. It's an acid base that cleans off dirt and dust or w/e may be causing the malfunction due to electrical issues. It's usually alot easier than cleaning it manually with like a Q-tip and water or w/e. Just take out ur drive, try and take off the front cover off the drive if possible. I've never tried it before so i wouldnt know if it comes off that easy. Anyways get as close as possible and spray a bit on the button, and around the side etc, basically getting every inch but dont let it run or anything.

But judgeing by the fact you say you switched drives and it still does this.. it may be located on the back on the power supply cord to the drive. Or elsewhere. Give you whole computer a good cleaning like with those air cans. Dirt and debry may be it, or just a softare issue altogether. But if you wanna give it a try, pick up some contact cleaner. I've found it to work on alot've things i couldnt reach to clean myself.

I misworded it. It was not doing this on my OLD DVD-RW. Just the new one. I will get some can stuff and open my computer up and give it a clean. (Thanks for the walkthrough on that, I was a little confused at first on what to do) It probably is a bit dusty. I'll let you know if it works.

Glad this doesn't sound like a virus to you guys!

It could be the dirty contact. I was just expanding onClarks post I'm not an expert by far, i've just had my share of disembling electronics. But it could also be faulting of your drive, and that alone. Like my post, my drive wont read but it'll open, spin everything and it could just be just the wrong software (you can have mine free of charge if you want, i want a new one anyway lol). But a pc free of dirt and debree would prolong it's life none the less. Anyways i just wanted to state that it could be other things. But im most certain it's not a virus, i've never heard of them doing this. The things i've known to do this is just pure and simple dirty/dusty contacts or faulty hardware (which in case just return it). None the less i hope it works for you. lemme know how it goes.
