If I place a DVD or any disk in my DVD drive it no longer starts up automatically. Also, it says that there is no disk in the drive when ther is. Any help will be appreciated.

Go to the Device Manager, right click the drive and select Uninstall, then restart the PC. If that doesn't work, visit this link and download the appropriate fix file for your version of Windows. Unzip it, and double click it to merge it into the registry. Restart the PC. If that doesn't work, grab yourself a bootable CD (your Windows install disc will work fine) and see if you can boot to it. If you can, then the drive itself is probably mechanically sound and the problem is deep in Windows. If you cannot boot to a CD, then the drive has likely failed and will require replacement. Luckily, new DVD burners are VERY inexpensive and can be had at Newegg for under $30.

If you're running Windows XP: click Start; click Run; type sysdm.cpl and press Enter; click the Hardware tab; click the Device Manager button.

If you're running Vista: click Start; right click Computer and select Properties; click Device Manager over in the left pane. You will get a Windows security warning; click OK or Continue or whatever it is.

Please post which version of Windows you're using so I won't have to post 2 sets of instructions each time. ;)
