Hi all First time user and not a computer geek so I really need some help.
I have been given a 12 month old Asus laptop that the owner has given up on and has gone a bought another, however me being a pensioner cannot afford to buy a new one or get this one repaired, so I thought I would ask the experts to see if anything can be done with this laptop.
Here is the problem - Windows 7 came preloaded however the owner did not like it and tried to install XP from some borrowed disk, it worked now the laptop has XP working on it however in the process somehow the DVD drivers no longer work and the laptop will not connect to the internet. I spent 30 minutes on the phone with Telstra trying to get it to find the ADSL connection but it will not and Telstra have given up saying it is a hardware problem. I thought that I would load Windows 7 back on and bought the disk but the DVD will not read the disk. I cannot update the driver because I cannot access the internet.
Please can anyone help me because I don't really want to throw away a perfectly good operational laptop.

Hi my friend , welcome to MG's :major

Maybe ethernet driver is missing , at the bottom of the laptop is the model of your laptop , you must inform about it , even go to Start - Run devmgmt.msc - ok , is there any ? in there ? :wave

DVD drivers are typically included. Its possible that there is something like Roxio software installed that is causing the problem.

Hello Falconattack thank you for the reply
The model number appears to be N533
In the devmgmt file all the "Other Devices" have a Yellow ?. Listed in the other devices is Audio device, BT-270, Ethernet Controller, Network controller, PCI Data Acquisition and signal processing Controller, PCI Simple Communications Controller, Unknown Device, Video Controller.
At the top of the tree is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive and conected under that is HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT32N

I hope all this means something to you. I look forward to hearing from you in due course thank you once again

    Kind regards Barry

So all these devices have a yellow question mark or exclamation mark?

If so, the first thing you should fix is your Internet connection (Ethernet Controller).

Can you right-click on that device, select Properties, tab Details, then tell us what the string is listed under Hardware Ids.

Someone will give you instructions what driver to download (on another computer, then transfer it using a USB memory stick).

    PCI\VEN_1969&DEV_1063&CC_020000

Have you considered going back to Windows 7?

Is the recovery partition still intact?

Is the product key on the bottom?

It shouldn't cost more than 20 bucks or so to order recovery media for it from the OEM, if needed.

Thanks for your reply Adrynalyne I would be happy to go back to Windows 7 and I do not know if the recovery partition is still intact and have no idea how to find out, what do I do?

    Thanks:-o

I can answer your question better if I know the exact model of the laptop.

    Thanks for your reply Adrynalyne

I posted the model number on one of my previous posts as N533 but I have looked at it again and it looks more like N53J. Under that is MB Ver N53JG I am not sure what that is.

    Hope this is helpfull

I was looking over the specs for that laptop. Pretty decent for a free machine!

For future issues, you might want to make a set of DVDs from the recovery manager ASUS includes. Just in case the partition goes bad.
