    I received from a friend a dvd/cd player.
    a delta electronics oipdv1200a.
From my perusings, it is not likely that I can get this puppy working.
It will handle data and audio cd quite well.
It doesn't know what to do regarding dvd.
The os never gets off the ground on this one. says device not ready.
I am told some sort of driver-like software is required.
I am also told that windows will provide hee hee.
I would appreciate some advice on this one.
    am running a p200 with w98se

    Thanks

    Hi and welcome to MajorGeeks.

You don't require drivers for CD drives to operate in Windows.

Only in certain applications like DOS programs are they required.

What does Device Manager say, and do you have any burning software installed?

device mgr says it is a cd-rom device. win98se

no burning software is installed. I don't think it supports it.

I believe that i tried to install cd burn soft but it had no effect. I notice that dma is turned off. I will try turning it on to increase access speed & try again.

    thanks

DMA should always be on. Optical drives aren't designed to run in PIO mode.

First thing I would do is update your motherboard/chipset drivers.
