I am running Windows XP 2004 Media Center Edition. I am using a Dell Dimension 8400 desktop 3.4 ghz, 1gb ram. All of a sudden my dvd reader and dvd rewritable drives disappeared from device manager. I tried using add new hardware wizard, but this did not work. I opened the case and made sure that all cables are properly connected. They were. I went to Microsoft support site and tried registry workaround (article Q320553) but still no results. I don't know what else to try. Someone please help!

I have tried your suggestion - rebooted 2 times - unfortunately, it did not solve the problem. Thanks for your suggestion.

If it is a recent problem try a system restore.
