I recently borrowed a dvd with data in it from a friend and when I inserted it on my pc, my pc can't read the dvd. When I tried opening it through my computer it gives an error message window with "Disk not formatted" on the title bar and the message that it can't read from the specified device because the file format isn't supported. I tried it on my cousin and friends pcs and they read it just fine so I tried burning it on a new dvd but the same thing happens. I need help on what the problem is and how to fix this.

I don't know the model of my drives but I use a Gigabyte cd-writer/dvd-rom combo drive and a Samsung superwrite master dvd-writer.

I think my problem is software related because my Samsung drive's brand new. But it could be something different.

    Thanks.

There are several things that can cause this. The most common IMO is the format of the DVD. When any disc is made, CD or DVD, it needs to be finalized by the software that burned it. The disc can not be rewritten or changed after that. In the case of DVDRWs or CDRWs you can reuse the disc by reformatting it, but other than that the same rules apply. Roxio's Drag to Disc is bad about this, the reason it is done is an unfinalized disc can be read by the software that wrote it.

The other thing that can cause it is there is something incompabible between the two drives. This could be slight tolerance issues, or maybe the disc itself is a little different.

If you can try the DVD in a 3rd computer. If it works then the second cause is more likely, if it doesn't have your friend burn another DVD disc, paying special attention the softare used and whether or not it is finalizing the disc.

I already tried it on other pcs and they read the disc fine. I also tried to burn it twice, tried it on other pcs, then tried it on mine. The others read it fine except for my pc. The software used to burn the disc is Nero.

I don't know if this can help but I checked the dvd (including dvds my pc can read) using nero infotool. On the file system on the disc, the ones that can be read has "iso..., joliet, and udf" but on the disc that can't be read it only has ", udf"
