I have a NEC-DV5500A it plays DVD's at 8x and reads CD's at 40x its pretty old and i use it on my pentium celeron which is 266MHz and i use Cyberlink PowerDVD to play my DVDS and when i put it some DVD's the computer goes really slow and never really moves except the mouse and when i put in a DVD ROM that doesn't freeze it... The DVD plays pretty slow and everything goes slow...
So does anyone have any suggestions about speeding it up and runnng my some
    of my DVD's??

    What are your system specs?

How much hard drive space is free?

    Do you have DMA enabled?

Easisest way is to attach an EVEREST log. (please don't copy and paste, only attach)

Your system is extremely dated and underpowerd, and what you're experiencing is to be expected.

Adding more RAM would certainly help (you have an empty DIMM slot), and it's not too expensive. (so would a bigger CPU, but you'll have to weigh up the cost)

Also, update DirectX, you're only using 8.1, and the latest is 9.0c.

Remove any unused programs and temp files etc, then carry out a defrag.

How to enable DMA (it should be enabled for hard drives as well as CD/DVD drives, if possible)

Just to add, one of your Maxtor hard drives (drive F: the 3GB one) only has a spindle speed of 5200 RPM, which is extremely slow, compared to the usual 7200 RPM.

Don't use that drive for playing or burning DVD's if you can.

I dont think i wanna install DirectX 9c because on my other computer 200MHz after i installed DirectX 9 all my games and programs started to run slow.
And by the way what is DMA? I enabled it but what does it do?

DMA is an acronym for Direct Memory Access.

It speeds up the transfer between the device and the CPU.

It should always be enabled where available.

To put it in basic terms, it's not powerful enough.

Working with videos and DVD's requires a somewhat faster machine.
