After attempting to use Nero 7Ultra to burn a disk (burn failed) my Plextor PX716A is no lo0ger recognized by Windows. It is there in BIOS but not seen in device manager or My Computer. Attempts to update driver fail BC the drives are not recognized. BIOS and chipset on Intel mobo have been updated. BIOS settings for both P & P and mobo make no difference. Advice to edit Reg to eliminate high and low filters no go because these settings are already absent.

Nero 7 Ultra cannot be removed via control panel or CCleaner bc "shellmanager database is corrupt or missing." I am thinking I will try to reinstall Nero7 Ultra on top (if I can) and then try to remove again. Right now I cannot even contemplate a reformat and reinstall of XP Pro because I cannot be certain the disk will be read.

Plextor says it is a Windows problem. Nero identifies this as a known issue and offers two utilities Driver Clean Tool and Registry Checker. No joy with either.

My next solution is C-4 in the box.

    Please advise.

At any rate, I'm flashing my router, so...take a look at this, and see if it helps. It certainly wont hurt you, aside from breaking Nero. Something to keep in mind.

    Hi Adrenalyne

    Thanks for the reply.

Not in Device Manager at all. My registry does not contain the Upper and Lower Filters at the address of the first recommended fix. The reg mod in the attached file also no joy. I can now confirm that Nero will not install on top, because it finds the earlier install, which I cannot remove because of the corrupt shellmanager. Catch 22.

I also did not mention the obvious in my first post, attempts to solve the problem with Restore have failed.

    I think I have the c-4 somewhere in the garage . . .

Where exactly in the BIOS is the drive detected?

    Thanks for the prompt reply.
As I recall, the drive is detected in Drives. I can reboot and check it to be certain.

First the HDs then another drive then this one.
It is noted as a slave drive. The master DVD CD is a Samsung. That is now not recognized as active at all. I have tried unplugging power to both and reboot . Then reconnect. Still reverts to the present configuration.

Can you boot off of a CD?

No, I do not have a USB CD Drive. All drives ate internal and subject to the problem.

I'm not making the connection. Can you boot off a CD in this drive, such as, the XP CD?

If your computer isnt a dinosaur, it supports it.

I will try to boot with the drive. I have not tried that before, because I thought the current problem would prevent the drive from being read.

    This will take a few . . .

No. Neither the Rescue CD nor the XP Pro install CD are recognized on boot.

BTW - I really like your Avatar. Is that paws up or about to claw the weapon?

    paws up :p

Well, the important thign to keep in mind is if you have it set in the bios to boot off the drive, and its not doing it..assuming a retail XP CD, then its proably not OS related.

At that point, I'd start looking at IDE ribbon cable issues, IDE controller issues...

    Right.

I powered off. Disconnected all DVD CD drives. Powered up. then off again and reconnected only the PX 716A.

Now that is recognized. Almost there.

I am now just finishing a brute force delete of all Nero files and reg entries.

I'm not certain whether it is just hardware or hardware and Nero, but since Nero recognizes this as a known issue, and since Nero7 Ultra is seriously bloated beyond my needs, I am dumping it.

Meanwhile thank you for following along on this headache. It has helped to have another head on the matter.

    Glad you found a resolution.

We are seeing a ton of these issues lately.

It appears Nero (and perhaps others) are intentionally creating problems in order to attempt to preserve market share. They lost a bit of that with me. I am now exploring other freeware DVD burning alternatives. I also recall not previous problems with Easy CD Creator through edition 5. Do you have any recommendations?

Well, these days I use ImgBurn, and the Vista built in burner for data. I don't ever burn audio, so I don't have a preference for that.

I'll give it whirl. I haven't yet made the plunge to VISTA. My headache quota is full this month . . .

Thanks again for your help with this one.
