Hi, Help!! Have a Dell Dimension E510, Pentium D CPU 2.80 GHz, 2.00 GB RAM, Windows XP, Service Pack 2.

My Computer no longer shows Drive D. The drawer to insert a DVD/CD opens and closes, the little green light blinks. Have disconnected and reconnected the power cord and cables to the mother/system board, booted and rebooted several times. Tried to uninstall and reinstall the drive more times than I care to remember. Regardless of what I do the Device Manager shows as follows:

Device Manager shows an ! within a yellow circle and "TSST corp CDRWDVD TS-H492C". General Properties shows: Device Type: DVD/CD-ROM drives; Location: 0 (0); Device Status: A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternative driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32); Device usage: Use this device (enable).

Computer Management/Disk Management shows Disk 0 (C) and Disks 1-4 as removable disks E, F, G, and H. Disk/Drive D is not listed. Per Microsoft web site tried upgrading driver (SFDN WIN 3.27.11) only to be informed "DRIVE NOT FOUND!". Heck, I could have guessed that; in fact, I had already figured that out. Worse yet, my guys have to play the Packers in Green Bay. And I live in San Diego wher:confusede the TV and allegged newspaper imply only one game will be played on Sunday. But, I digress. So, any ideas?

    First, welcome to MajorGeeks. :major
Second, does the computer BIOS see the drive? When you first power on, and get the Dell logo, it should say "Press F2 for setup" or something very close to that. So press F2 when you see the prompt, this will open the BIOS screen(s). Look thru these screens for something that says IDE drives or peripheral devices or whatever. If the drive is listed, it would be listed in the same general area as your hard drive. If the BIOS sees the CD drive, then the problem is either a software problem, or the drive itself isn't communicating with Windows. If the drive doesn't show up in the BIOS, then it's either not connected properly, not jumpered properly, or it's dead. Dell usually has a diagnostic tool for download. Go to www.dell.com and mouse over to the big blue question mark. Then mouse up to and click on Downloads & Drivers, enter your Service Tag number after clicking on the middle choice, and you'll be directed to a list of downloads for your PC. Try the diagnostic, and maybe the chipset drivers too. Also look to see if there's an update or a CD/DVD drive download that addresses your problem.

    Andrynalyne,

    Okay, thanks for your reply.

I downloaded and unzipped the Windows XP registry files to my desktop. When I double click "Merge" the message "Merge file does not have a program associated with it. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel" appears. Need a little help here, exactly what do I merge xpcd with? Also, now that I have "Explored" the XPCD Zip file it seem that I should not unzip the file to the desktop but rather "Extract" it to a file. Same question, exact/merge XPCD to what?

Also looked at the Run regedit option and found the key just as it appears in your message. Have no clue, however, as to what the values for the Upper and/or Lower filters are so I cannot remove them. I would prefer to merge the XPCD file rather than edit the Registry but am curious as to how the Key should be edited. Perhaps you could list how the key should look once it is properly edited.

I appreciate your response and expertise, but without additional information I cannot implement either of your suggestions.

It appears you have multiple issues here.

When you double click the file, it should ask if you want to merge it. If it does not, and asks what to do with the file, you have broken file associations as well.

In regards to unzip or extract, they mean the same thing.

So first thing we want to do is go to Control Panel. From here, go to folder options. Click on the file types tab.

Look for Extension type Reg Registration entries. Highlight it.

    Go to Advanced.

    What actions are listed?

    Defaults are;

    edit
    Merge
    print

Only extension types are those you indicated; edit, Merge, print.

    Highlight Merge and click edit.

Change the application used to regedit.exe.

Click OK, then try my regfile.

No good. Went to Edit File Type

    Registration Entries
    Actions.......New
    edit .......... Edit
    Merge ....... Remove
    print ....... ...Set Default

Highlighted Merge in the Actions column. Clicked Edit in the right hand column.
Nothing happens except for the Set Default box to blink. (When Merge is highlighted Set Default is grayed out.) Highlighting either edit or print and then clicking Edit brings up a page where changes could be made. Also, when edit or print is highlighted Set Default is no longer grayed out.

Go to start, run, and type regedit.

Notice that it is a tree view. Navigate to this key:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\regfile\shell\open\command

Once you have it highlighted on the left (on command folder), look to the right.

There is a value named (Default). It needs to have a value of

    regedit.exe "%1"

If it doesnt, right click it and choose modify and change it. The changes are immediate and do not require reboot.

If all goes well, you can use my xpcd regfix.
