DVD player doesn't.

    Working on a Dell laptop for a friend.
    DVD player is recognized by the machine, and properties show that it is working properly.
    Wrong.
    Will not play a DVD disk or any other type of disk.
    When trying for a movie, Windows Media Player gives a message that " A compatible codecs package could not be found."
    Thinking of installing VLC, but unsure of how it would do in regard to the game angle.
    Suggestions?

    Try this option uninstall any other codecs installed http://majorgeeks.com/CCCP_Combined_Community_Codec_Pack_d6093.html

    I can play DVDs with this Codec pack.This has all the major packs for the wmp

    Try VLC portable. Just set it in a folder on the desktop or run it from a USB stick. I've done that on several computers that I don't wish to install the player on.

    MajorGeeks portable version download is only for OSX and that's why I've given an outside link for the download.

    Thanks for both replies.
    Both are now installed.
    DVDs play now. Don't know about games yet.

    Hi hrlow2

    Games should be fine especially if they use for any video interludes they have a codec thats in a Codec pack, however if a game is not working its likely to be the graphics drivers as games do tend to use there own video codecs, so check Dell for an update to that laptops gfx driver.

    Also check if any items in Device Manager are yellow ! marked, as a precaution.
