I have a Toshiba Satellite S55-A5295 laptop that i use Windows 10 on. After the latest update my DVD player does not work. The Toshiba Media player program opens but will not run the video. I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it and still no luck. Do you think they will come up with a fix for this? Is there anything I can do to recover the use of my player?

Do you mean the player itself? If so, I have no idea how to find out what component it is. Would I have to uninstall the driver that is there first?

Right-click the far left bottom tile icon and choose 'Device Manager'
From the menu open the arrow for DVD/CDROM devices. Right click on what appears there and choose 'Properties' > As long as it says 'This device is working properly', then go to the top menu and choose 'Driver' and choose 'update driver' and then select 'search automatically' making sure you are connected to the internet.

As well as the above, the DVD player itself may well need cleaning to get rid of dust and moisture. You can get cheap commercial products to do that.

Check your Windows 10 update settings and turn off driver updates. If you don't chances are it will update and install the driver that breaks the player.

That very much depends whether the OP's Windows 'Update History' actually shows any driver update at the time the problem started. We would need to know that otherwise it's just conjecture that isn't helpful. As someone running four systems that were upgraded to Win 10 from 7 & 8, I haven't experienced those problems. I've no doubt some people have but there's a hell of a lot of nonsense being posted online about Windows 10 that is laughable in comparison to problems that surfaced around Windows XP and Vista, let alone the hue and cry about Windows 8.

The box said the the driver was up to date. It also said that the device was "migrated" on 9/5/16. I could not turn off any of the Windows updates now.

Does that date you quote (I assume September 9th?) coincide with the time the problems started?
Can you please look at your Windows Update 'update history' and see if it shows there for that date.

I see in the history list that the last updates were on 10/11/16. There were many. Cumulative, system, and Office 7

The question was, did the driver update you mentioned ('9/5/16') coincide with the start of the DVD problem, and were you able to see in your Windows update history chronology a date for that driver update.

Compatibility, malicious software removal, Adobe Flash player, Silverlight

It might be easier to find it from Reliability history, if it goes back to early September: Control Panel\System and Security\Action Center\Reliability Monitor

No the problem started on the last rounds of updates, on the 10th.

OK, so the driver update you mentioned for the date 9/5/16 was not the date your DVD problem started.
Well, I therefore can't see those recent Windows Updates (I assume they happened on or after 11 October) having anything to do with your DVD problem.

Where will I find reliability history? Settings?

No. I don't use it all the time though. So just thought I noticed it after the last update came in.

You may just have a problem with that DVD drive, bad connections internally, dirt dust heat. I suggest you get a standard commercial DVD drive cleaner. If you know your way around opening the system itself you can check for connections and there are many You Tube tutorials how to do that safely and carefully.

Control Panel > System and Security > Action Center > Maintenance > Reliability Monitor

If it's not there, Max should be able to point out the location on W10.

Found it. The device quit responding on the 9th and and the 10th. And the function key main module quit working...

When it says it sent a report, does that go to Toshiba or Windows? Is there a way uninstall the updates?

I just noticed that the scale of performance went from 10 to 6 after the 9th.
It showed that today I uninstalled the player and it did not have success on reinstalling it.

Does the DVD player play any discs?

  25. daybreak

    daybreak Private E-2

No. I have tried several different ones. It tries to run and then stops when I put the disc in.

Open Device Manager. Double-click the drive. What does it show under Device status?

  27. daybreak

    daybreak Private E-2

    says it is working properly.

Then there's something wrong with the drive.
    See post #18.

OK thanks for your time. I will be gone for a few days and have to see about it when I return...

In Windows 10, Control Panel -> All Control Panel Items -> Security and Maintenance -> Maintenance -> View Reliability History.
