My daughter has a Dell Inspiron that is only a few months old and before we contact Dell I wanted to ask here if this is something we can do or if we need actual service.

Here's the situation ... her DVD used to work just fine, she likes to watch DVD's of TV series. Now, the DVD will not play. I looked in the "Device Manager" and found that there is a "yellow !" indicating a problem with the device. The driver is updated to the most recent one.

There is an error message under the "General Tab" of the info box that pops up when you double-click on the device that says that the device will cannot be started because of configuration problems.

Included is the information from Device Manager and the portion of the Registry that was indicated. Also, the information on the computer.

Please let me know how to "re-install" the device if this is possible of how to correct this issue, if we can - or let me know if we need to call Dell (ugh)

    Information from computer:
    Dell Imspiron one 2020
    Intel Pentium CPU G645T @ 2.5- GHz
    4 GB RAM
    64-bit OS, x64 based processor
No pen or touch imput available for this display

From Device Manager info box when double-clicking on device (this device has yellow !)

Thanks for the help. I went and read the info at the link you posted and that led me to the right directions I needed.

    The drive once again works.

Only thing is .... WHY did Microsoft hide some of the tools needed to keep the computer running smoothly! :(

They did not hide anything. The tools are still there in the same place. If this machine has Windows 8, most likely she was using the Dell video player, which is not that great, same goes with the one that Toshiba has for their machines.

I personally like VLC over the other OEM players. As for your problem, I am going to guess that she was doing something, and accidentally picked something up by not watching what she was opening in links or deleted something that she thought that she did not need.

I give users the two strikes rule. You mess up your machine two times, you are on your own, and have to seek out how to figure how to fix the problem yourself.
