I have a LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160PS. It is not working. When I try to burn a CD RW it says "insert a disc", but i have already. I also tried playing a CD and DVD on it--nothing! When i go to my computer and double click on the icon it just opens a blank screen with E:\ and nothing. I did just have my hard drive wiped and reformatted last week. My OS is Windows XP Professional, the same that i had before I reformatted. The same place i bought the computer did it. It is a custom built PC. I have installed all Windows updates including Service Pack 3. and everything else. The DVD ROM is working fine, but the DVD R/RW is not responding to anything. Any ideas? I obviously am going to call the store where i got the HD wiped, but they are closed today (Sunday) so i thought maybe i could get a quick fix here. Thanks.

Did the DVDRW work when you first got it back? Have you reinstalled your burning software? If I'm correct in assuming that you have two ROM devices, you could try reading this, http://adrynalyne.colemanguy.com/CD.html. No gurantees that you will find either filter but worth a shot. Hope this helps.:)

The first time I tried it after i got it back last week, it did NOT work. I have no burner software disc or anything, I never have. I assumed that it was already included when i first bought the PC, 3 years ago because it always worked. And yes, i do have 2 drivers --DVD ROM and DVD R/RW. I will have a look at the andrynalyne link. Thanks.

Should the link that I gave not help, you could also try going into Device Manager and deleting/uninstalling the DVD RW drive and rebooting. Sometimes this makes Windows recognize the drive and its capabilities. Please post back with the results! :)

I haven't tried unzipping that file from the link you sent yet. I am a bit leary of it because it says "we are not responsible for any data loss". I am not sure if i am willing to try it. I think I will just call the computer store that sold me the PC and just recently wiped my HD last week. Don't you think that is the safest bet?

I tried uninstalling the DVD RW drive. Rebooted. It was recognized but it still does not work. It keeps saying "insert a disc into drive E:" BUT I DID!!!! Many, all brand new CD RW's. They are not recognized, nothing is...even DVD's and CD's. The properties to hardware to device status says "device is working properly". And i tried Update Driver and it says "cannot find a better match for hardware than the current software installed". So i have no idea what the heck is going on. Like i said b4, it used to work fine, but ever since i got the hard drive wiped and reformatted, now it doesn't work. But the other driver, the DVD ROM, works fine. I 'm lost.
